Best way to gain an eidetic memory is to work on getting an eidetic memory. Using the chess example, you don't become a chess grandmaster by, for example, taking a run, you learn through experience, and through techniques associated with chess. So to gain an eidetic memory you would spend time on each of your senses. Since you're wanting a photographic memory, most of all, you'd work on your ability to visualise.

What you'd do is fixate on an object - make sure you're in a comfortable place because you're going to be there for a while and it helps to be relaxed when first learning. Then close your eyes and try to bring that image back in your mind's eye. Focus on the image for a while, trying to recall as much of it as you possibly can, then open your eyes and look at it again, trying to find more detail about it that you can add the next time you close your eyes. Just sit and observe it. Then close your eyes again once you feel you've taken enough in, and try to bring it back to mind again. This time the image should be clearer with a slight bit more detail. Now do it one more time. Fixate on the object until you feel comfortable in that you've taken in as much as you can and then close your eyes. Try to see as much as possible, and as much of the area around your object as well. Hold this image for as long as you can, if it disappears then try and bring it back. Once it reaches a point where you don't feel comfortable pulling it up again, start to think about other things. Think about random objects like an apple, and try to draw that into your mind's eye. Try to visualise friends and family, etc, if you're capable.

Your practice sessions should last between 30 minutes and an hour. You should also try to take mental snapshots throughout the day. Whenever you get a free moment, observe, then shut your eyes and bring the full image into your mind, and hold it for as long as you want. I did this a while back and it shocked me that despite 'seeing' all that was there, I wasn't observing it. When I closed my eyes and had a look, I could actually see more than I could when I was actually seeing it for real.

Learning to visualise vividly is best when you're fully relaxed, so take several deep breaths, exhaling much slower than your inhale.

Same technique applies to all other senses. Although once you've mastered your visual then you should try and visualise whilst incorporating another sense in there. The thing is, the more senses you use in a memory, the better it is at sticking... permanently.

Like others have said, it's never been scientifically proven, and eidetic memory is the closest thing and that's extremely rare.

You're gonna have to find another way to pass your exams.
