But in all seriousness, find some people with a common interest, something that's always developing and always has some discussion value. It's why people always say to talk about the weather if you don't know what to say. Not saying to talk about the weather (unless you know a few weather-buffs for whatever reason), but something that you can talk about, and enjoy listening about. Things you're interested in will allow a bit more passion when you do discuss, and that usually leads to a more engaged response if the interest is mutual.

It's kind of hard to explain how to be good at talking to strangers....it either comes naturally or you need to work really hard at it (but as a catch 22, if you look like you're working hard at it, it can look creepy).
