As much as I've enjoyed listening to guitar solos over the years, I especially appreciate it when a band makes great use of trumpets on a track. Case-and-point: Earth, Wind & Fire

I love cellos in music because I play cello myself They have such a beautiful, rich sound that can be either extremely deep or high and light. I also like violas in music, though they're not very common since I think about a third of the world doesn't even know they exist, haha.

Some stripped-down piano or keyboard is pretty cool in music as well. I wish I could think of a good example of a song right now but my music brain is suffering. Ah well, if I can think of one I'll post it.

Other than that, just any instrument that's unconventional for the genre makes for interesting music. I love Apocalyptica because, aside from the whole cello thing, they make metal and hard rock music with classical instruments rather than the more common guitar and drums.

I'm surprised that people wouldn't know that such an instrument exists because it's in the same family of instruments as a violin--it's the middle voice of said family between the cello and the violin.
