First day at work!

Well my first day at my second job I was actually doing on the job training. (I won't mention my first job, I'd rather forget about it - not because it was bad, but because of the sheer boredom of it).
I started at 7am in the morning as planned and was dropped off by my brother because I had no idea where in the building I was supposed to be. I met with the old guy who was gonna be showing me how to do the job and then I spent the first three hours just following him round while he worked. I finished at 3pm, went home, ate something then went to bed. Got up at 11pm and got ready to go back to work with my brother at 12am who would be training me on night shift for the next four days. I started at 12am each night and worked my shift with him til 5:30am then I went and helped him do his second shift for free for helping me out with the job in the first place. The second shift was at another place in the city centre working for the same company so we went straight from mine to his and we finished work every morning at 7:00-7:30am depending on what was required each night.
It was a really long week and the stupid thing about it was that I was never trained to do my job during the hours I was supposed to be working and then from my first time on my own hours onwards I was the only person on my shift from 3:30pm til 8:30pm.
I quit the job after two or so months though because we had some random guy break into the floor I was working on and no one batted an eyelid. I worked up there on my own from 6pm onwards and I had no way of contacting reception cause everyone was already gone and contacting security was just as difficult because there was one security guard covering 10 floors and he didn't even have a mobile.

If I'm honest though I'd much rather have a day job and pursue my passion for writing - but that sort of thing isn't something you can say you've had a first day at work for or done something 'real' in terms of it until you've been published but I suppose I could say that, after starting it fours years ago, I've put just as much, if not more, effort into writing the story I'm currently working on than I will or have ever put into any job I've ever had.

Well, you could say that you've had a "real" day if you were writing for a journal or something but I guess that's not what you were talking about?

The way I see it, though, is at least it's something? And it should be close enough to what you WANT TO do that maybe it'll help you reach your goal?

It is something and because writing novels isn't something that can be taught really I guess in a way what I'm doing now is essentially working towards the end goal in the best way possible because in this sort of area there's not really a lot you can do if you're not willing to sit down and actually write.
The writing process is all good for practice and I started plenty of different ideas before I settled on this one so you're right when you say that it will help me reach my goal.

You don't know what you are missing. In the job I had before the above I had to take inbound calls, despite having literally no advice to offer the person calling. All I could do was pass them on to someone else, which I felt bad about. There was one old lady who hit me with this random question: "I'm looking for a bird feeder. I've tried all the pet shops in the town and none of them have any. I am not willing to travel outside of this town because I am 82. What would you recommend?". Now, I was 18 years old and working in an bog standard office for the local council; I had no formal training on bird feeders or where to get them. The way to deal with a question like that is to reply like so: "Ask someone who gives a *bleep*, and if you're asking my name is -insert name of colleague you dislike-".

In my most recent job I had to deal with loads of telephone calls, in and out. Now, I don't know if it's the same for anyone else, but I actually enjoyed it when people were rude to me. It was like a challenge. I'd think so myself, "Okay, how can I be as unhelpful as possible here?". I once had the great honour of being described as the "most unhelpful person" some middle aged sounding guy had ever spoken to.

Have you ever tried writing shorter works? Alongside full length novels; maybe short stories to get your name out there first.

Thank you.
At the moment there simply isn't much of a market in the UK for short stories and unfortunately novellas tend not to let previously unpublished writers enter their work for the publication.
That and the ideas I come up with for stories are simply too complex to be condensed into such a small space.

can someone enlighten me and explain what the point is to working without getting paid? hell, i thought that was illegal.
