He doesn't seem to be able to comprehend that not everyone is immune to feeling insulted through words, and that not everyone finds racist/sexist jokes funny. Btw, glad you stepped up to the plate here vex.

just because offence isn't intended doesn't mean it cannot be taken, and the whole "it's only text on the internet" thing is the weakest argument possible. if you genuinely can't grasp that, and you genuinely can't grasp why certain topics are more sensitive than others, i honestly don't think you're worthy of an explanation.

you're smarter than you're giving off in this thread, hiig, and you know it.

Common sense. Everyone who has replied thus far seems to understand which topics aren't socially acceptable. Myself, and Vex have already mentioned some reasons why. If you still don't understand and can't empathize then there's not a whole lot we can do to help you understand.

Just understand that the majority of people don't share your same point of views. It's not a matter of agreeing to disagree, the values you hold are a minority, and could lead to getting you in trouble both IRL, and online.

Just to interject here as someone who has had to deal with many, many racist jokes growing up, when someone tells a racist joke oftentimes the ostensible humor in it is only funny if the teller and audience actually believe the set up. You laugh because you believe that the stereotypes are true. (As an aside, the people who told most of the racist jokes in secondary school inevitably had the most overtly racist parents...I'm fairly certain that there is an institutionalized causation there)

And see, there is the rub really because jokes and laughter in general are all about tribes...laughter quite literally binds us together...and when you are telling racist jokes you are framing those people as "the other" and outsiders. Someone to laugh at. Someone who is not you and therefore worse than you (because your tribe is the best). This can be fine if you are out with your mates (provided that you aren't all actually racist but I'm working on the assumption that you are not here, hiigaran) but it becomes problematic when you post it on a public forum because once you do that you have immediately taken a side. A side that challenges other posters on this forum who actually belong to that minority group in particular and explains to them that they aren't welcome.

Humor is great but humor at the expense of other people is divisive and selfish whether you intend it to be or not. And honestly there a million wonderful ways to be funny without alienating people so there's no reason to go to that place.

This works both ways, you know. Just because you like making racist jokes for "teh lolz" and end up making people feel bad doesn't mean that everyone else should accommodate you.

What's with all the nuke77 hate? Barely visit this forum anymore. But at one time it was hoggys2much, then the guy who quit I think due to all the abuse he got and then returned who always spoke about his long hours job and wife (forget his name), castlewars at some point. Seems Loungin' regularly finds a victim.

I'm not here often, but from what I see this is essentially CupsOfSauce all over again, except a little run down and mundane rather than the stuck up, realist that the former situation seemed to be. People are quick to denounce others or show some sort of superiority when they see something done they deem socially unacceptable by either their terms or general terms. You can see it in public all the time. I've just dismissed it as human behavior.

Although Cobtal and hoggys were a bit different. Both of them actively -called out- members in the forum, making a name for themselves and start.... how would you say, text wars over trivial things like video game characters or sexual orientation. One you have a track record, it's stuck. Even if members like Deis, Seraph, or Dinosoid came back they'd be greeted by the same old reputation they had prior.

It's just people, really. You'd expect them to act better, but it never changes.
