I'm going to fail Discrete Math and Comp Sci 1

there's only 7 more classes left, 14 hours of instruction...
You know that somber feeling knowing that something bad will inevitably happen, i have that. I know I will fail Discrete Math. There's been 5 weeks of classes already (summer semester is shorter, and classes longer) and I still have no idea what i"m doing. I've been studying ~12 hours a week for this class and still can't do more than 20% of the homework. I don't know if he expects us to work more than 12 hours, but i also have another 4 credit class and also working 30 hours a week. like serisously, i only get 5-6 hours of sleep during the week.

the teacher types his own notes and gives them to us, no textbook. Although, I did buy a discrete math textbook by Susan Epps. I find the textbook much easier to read and understand than the notes, but like over half the topics we cover in class isn't well described in the textbook.

I think a lot of it has to do with the teacher making it harder than it needs to be. even in class, he speaks at such a high level that none of us students understand. If anything, it is stunting our education becasue we can't grasp the subject before he digs in deep. Sort of like teaching a person to scuba dive before teaching them to swim!

and there's only one graded assignment, the FINAL EXAM. no hw, no midterm, no project, just one final exam! I've had tough teachers before, but this guy is at a whole other level. with the other toughies, i understood what they were trying to communicate, and therefore could study. for this, I can't even study properly bc i don't knwo wtf im reading!

well, i'm going to fail, and i won't be able to get my prerequisites done to do my master's

Figure out the way you learn, man. Some people are good at theoretics, some people need physical conceptualisation. Find some way to engage with the numbers and the methods they're teaching...that's the extra thing most teachers won't teach beyond the textbooks. Mathematics is all about patterns and systems. Memorise the most basic problems on your syllabus by practising questions over and over in speed runs, and then apply the system to the more difficult problems. You can score bonus points just by having a go and showing an understanding even if the final answer is wrong.

I went to my GCSE resit lessons stoned and drunk half the days man...I got an A on the exam, because that's how I learn....sums and numbers are just pieces of a puzzle.
