Don't you hate when friends lie to you?

Hey Loungin'. It's been a while.

I have a problem with my awkwardness and my friend Jacob was willing to help me out this weekend. He was helping me learn to talk to people and just be comfortable overall and it really helped. I'm so much better now. Then Jacob said I should up my fashion sense so we were going to go clothes shopping yesterday but I think he blew me off completely.

I decided to call him to ask when we were going but he couldn't go. He told me his parents pretty much grounded him and barred him from leaving the house last night because he didn't do his chores and they think he leaves the house too much. So I changed my plans and went to hang out with another friend and we got pretty drunk. I drunk texted my friend (the one that ditched me) thanking him for helping me get my life together and stuff, but some other guy responded, using Jacob's phone, pretty much mocking me (which I thought was hilarious at the time) and he sent a picture of his drunk face. I just told him to *bleep* off.

This morning we had a conversation it pretty much went like this:

Jacob: Hey dude, sorry. Just so you know that was my friend Sohrab texting you last night.
Me: Yeah, I figured that out. haha. I thought your parents kept you from leaving the house last night.
Jacob: They didn't let me. But they eventually let me out only to go to Jesse's house. He had a neighborhood party.
Me: They really let you go out? It sounded like they were at the end of their rope with you by the way you explained it.
Jacob: *sigh* -___-

...and it ended with that.

Now I'm pissed and conflicted because he lied and went somewhere else but I could be wrong. I don't care if he went to a party. I just want to know if he lied and ditched me for his other friends or his parents really let him go. I would have understood if he wanted to postpone the day because his friend had a get together and he didn't want to miss it. He knows that, and there's no reason to lie to me.

tl;dr - My friend and I had plans but he couldn't go because his parents didn't let him go out. I found out he was really at a party. Now I think he lied and I'm mad.

Should I just forget about the lie and go on as if nothing happened, or confront him about it?

First, I'm not sure if he lied to you. It's fairly common for parents to relent if you bother them enough...

It doesn't sound malicious anyway, so I would just forget about it. One of the fastest ways to lose a friend, especially a new one, is to make a big deal out of nothing.

this is why i have a 100% blunt honesty policy. if someone asks something of me, id rather say that i couldnt be bothered, than to agree, and change my mind at a later point. you just piss people off, and screw up their plans. sure, they might be annoyed at you for refusing to help initially, if you told the truth, but theyll get over it much more easily.

naturally, this means that i despise friends who lie, but lucky for me, i havent been in such a situation...yet.

Take a deep breath and just let this one go. He's helped you out recently and even if you know that he's lied to you about being grounded you should cut him a little slack this one time. Confronting him about it isn't going to make him think of you any better (you'll just sound like a jealous girlfriend) and although I'm sure you've fantasised about making him feel guilty about it, keep those thoughts to yourself. It hurts at the time, but you need to let it go and try not to be bitter about it. When it comes down to it, you have nothing to gain by acting rudely towards him or trying to guilt trip him about it.

If it happens repeatedly you might have to say something, but this once is really not a big deal, even though it's frustrating at the time.

Lesson learned for you, Koj. The world is full of people like Jacob, scum who'll help you to stroke their ego, then dump you when it gets too much like work. You shouldn't trust people you aren't paying and you certainly shouldn't open up to anyone, expect maybe a parent.
