It honestly comes down to if your parent uses it as a last resort or just regularly does it. While when I was younger I sort of feared my Dad, I do appreciate that his influence made me never do something incredibly stupid in my life.

Also Google turns up many articles which are pro-spanking, but like with your links they have nothing to do with the article. I'm not saying it is a source, I'm saying that they wouldn't need sources due to their experience and being experts in their field. The only sources they cited (and needed) was in the Bible counter-argument.

The basis of this isn't in research or studies, but I could probably find some if you'd like, but in their vast experiences. You don't get to practice pediatric medicine for so long and get to 40+ books knowing nothing.

I'm frankly just appalled that your logical answer is to disregard this article because they don't have sources instead of answering the points they bring up; which is probably what someone should be doing instead of attacking an irrelevant part of it.

So we agreed then, they didn't put any sources. I simply want to see where they are pull those figures out of. It is study this, and study that. I want solid evidence.

The views of the article appear to be so extreme, it is hard to look at it seriously. Nothing in that article even suggests a point of counter-argument. Yes, my logic tells me to disregard the article, which I can clearly see from the evidence is strongly bias towards one direction.

This is the direct quote from it: "This rationalization holds true for some children, but other children remember spanking messages more than nurturing ones." Were it a good article it would follow up on why it works for some children. I frankly don't give a shit what you do to your children, but I can clearly see that this is a badly written piece.

I agree with DC Sniper on this one.

Personally I disagree with this sort of punishment because, for one thing, it goes against my ideology of how to TREAT children to begin with. In my eyes, children are human beings, if not, more valuable (whether it be emotional attachment or the undeniable assurance that they represent and carry the future). Is it tolerable to smack someone on the street for acting odd or making a mistake? Would any adult stand for being punished so?

I'm all for communication. This whole 'actions speak more than words' idea of hitting your child only reinforces the authority through trauma, not through understanding. You may argue the results, but I think raising a more respectable human being requires more nurturing. I think the main problem with raising children is people imposing this mindset that children lack a degree of understanding. Sure, they are developing minds, but they are still capable of logic, and building on that logic is beneficial in the overall development of the person. Have we all forgotten what it's like to be a child?

I think it's better to level with a kid while still communicating with them with a heightened maturity (in other words, not talking down to them). Children can think, and they are capable of learning. Hitting them is so primitive when we have language to communicate. If anyone is really fundamental on the whole physical punishment of children, then think of how it communicates. It's a response that translates from a feeling, such as pain, to convey a message. The only stage in human life where communication is primarily based on feeling is in the newborn stage, so logically hitting as a punishment can only be effectively applied to babies. How about that: baby beating.

I'm only reinforcing the point, kids are not total dumbshits. It's better to reinforce their developing thought process and suggest logical morality than indoctrinate through fear and pain. With fear and pain, you'll get a militantly obedient person with manners set on caution, or a resentful and bitter person. Is an obedient kid grown from physical punishment respectable out of consideration of others, or only of themselves? I guess so long as it gets the job done, then its good enough, right? Maybe in the short-term...

I always thought it was wrong. Besides, why hit them when you can just punish them some other way? I always found that to be pretty unnecessary.
