 What is Mastermind?
Mastermind is a tournament created and hosted by yours truly, Dash the Stampede. Beginning as a simple series of games for fun, Mastermind originated in I-RP as a simple series of games now known as Mastermind BETA. After my experiences in Big Brother Neoseeker 3, I directed my attention towards creating Season 1, learning Neo BB's pros and cons. Said work brought about the success that is Mastermind Season 1, followed up by Mastermind Season 2. I now seek to do the same thing here with Mastermind 3, the newly revamped season. This season features a new system, many new challenges, and new location.
This is an abstract thinking game. The rules are easy to understand and are straightforward, leaving room for imagination, strategy, tactics, diplomacy, alliances, solo work, and so forth. There is no right way to play.
If you seek competition based upon only your skills, where every decision counts, chance to meet new people exist, something to do in the new year, or even the chance to become a bit more known, this is the game for you! Finally, in collaboration with the NeoInterviews, the winner of Mastermind Season 3 will earn themselves an official interview.
The events and drama from the game will be documented within the Neo Newspaper each month until the game's conclusion. The more active everyone is, the more likely they are to get featured.
How to Play
Players will advance through stages, with each stage featuring two events. The time and date of each event will always be announced in advance by a day. Each event will last generally over the course of 1 to 5 days, depending on the event. At the end of each event, the points earned transfer to overall score. The player with the most points on the scoreboard earns first place in the rankings while player with least is in last.
After 2 rounds of game play, nomination begins. Whoever is ranked in last place will be automatically nominated. They'll be joined by whoever is nominated by the player who holds first place in the rankings. These two players will proceed to the Elimination Showdown.
Elimination Showdowns are face offs between players up for elimination from the game. The nominated players fight for your survival. There is no voting by your fellow competitors to decide if you stay. No non-elimination weeks that make everything pointless. No twists, surprises, or bullshit. Players enter. Winners return. Loser leaves.
Stages Round 1-> Round 2-> Nomination-> Elimination Showdown-> Next Stage
The four players who can survive this process will advance to the Mastermind Semi-Finals. The scoreboard will reset to zero and a three game series begins. The two players with highest scores at the end will advance to Mastermind Finals. Furthermore, the player who has the highest score will be able to decide 3 of the 5 games in Mastermind Finals while second place decides 2.
Semi-Finals Round 1-> Round 2-> Round 3-> Mastermind Finals
The Mastermind Finals are the pinnacle of the player's progress! Since its the finals, I won't let things end with something lame like voting. Instead, the two survivors will have a Best of 5 Game Showdown. I will present the players with a list of 10 games to select from. As mentioned before, the player who comes in first place for Semi-Finals will select 3 games and 2nd place selects 2 games. The one who wins 3 games first becomes the winner of Mastermind Season 3!
Mastermind Best of Five Finals Game 1-> Game 2-> Game 3-> Game 4-> Game 5-> Mastermind Season 3 Champion
Do you think you can join the ranks of Dac and Spikerdude? If so, read below on how to sign up!
Signing up for Mastermind is easy. Simply send me a PM with the following inside:
1) Reason you want to play 2) A link to your results for this 3) Anything else you want to say or show which you believe will impress me
Mastermind has only 10 12 seats, so do your very best. The first seat is reserved for Mastermind Champion Spikerdude, who has accepted the champion's privilege. This is the only privilege he has though coming into this game and will be on equal grounds as everybody else.
Sign Ups will remain open until January 19th. After I'll announce this season's cast.
Rules
There aren't many rules. In regard to exclusive game rules themselves, I've a special way to handle those I'll come back to. Still, there are three cardinal rules all Mastermind players most follow:
1) Be active. I'll do the best I can to keep in mind people's various schedules and give time for other things, but activity is a must. 2) Don't take it TOO serious. I don't mind drama, it's all part of the fun. Still, at the end of the day, it is just a game. Don't make things personal. 3) Send in Journals at the end of each stage. After the Elimination Rounds, all I ask is that everybody sends PMs to me documenting their Mastermind experiences. I wish to hear about your planning during the various games, thoughts on experiences, allies, enemies, etc.
Sample Game
Included below is a sample game which has been used in every version of Mastermind. Mastermind uses game theory, online games, and party games which incorporate thoughts, competition, and so forth. This is an example of one of the renovated.
The Mexican Standoff
All players are armed with a gun and 500 points. Each gun is filled with 1 bullet that will reloaded every hour after each shot. To shoot another player, post the following:
Shoot: @player’s name@
If a player does shoot, their victim’s current points will be divided in half. Half of their points will be kept as part of the victim’s final score, the other to their attacker. If the solution doesn't end in 5 or 0, I will round up for the attacker and down for the victim.
For example: If Player A shoots Player B, Player B drops to 250 points while Player A increases to 750. If Player A is then shot by Player C, Player A’s 750 will be divided in half to 375 while Player C will increase to 875. If Player D then shots Player C, Player C will drop to 435 and Player D to 990. This is just one of many scenarios possible.
Once a player is shot, they are eliminated from the game. If nobody shoots, everybody will receive 500 points to their overall score.
The game will continue until there is a single player standing or the time limit of 2 days has run out. If there is a last man standing, they will receive a special bonus prize in private.
Special Thanks
First, I'd like thank Smell The Chiken for allowing Mastermind to have the Interview prize. Second, Quierta for her support during development of Season 3, the new logo, and various other things she's done to help out.
Aside from all of that, I look forward to seeing this years cast! Any questions involving the game can be asked in here and this thread is fully open for you all to discuss at moment, share if you sign up, or anything else like that which usually comes along with these threads.Edit: Jan 19, 12 5:05am
