I think it's just a desperate attempt to be popular. The guy has not too much life to live if he's 90 so he just wants to go out with a bang, I suppose.

if we die then so be it but i'm not going to worry about some event killing me the off the same way dying of old age isn't worrying me. it's going to happen eventually why give a crap about when and how? enjoy your life and do what makes you happy sounds like a good deal to me
