You're probably a southerner. Here in West Yorkshire, it's fairly commonplace to talk to people at bus stops and the like. There's a consensus up here that everyone from the south is really ignorant. I'm sure it's not true (although if I ever tried to start a conversation with someone when I've been in London, when waiting for the tube or whatever, people seemed to look at me like I was going to knife them).
