If it were my decision I'd just stop making them. The only people I'll tell when I leave, if any, are the people who I talk to regularly. I'd probably put it in my profile somewhere too. I don't see any need in a public leaving unless you are a pretty big figure on here, of which there are few.

However...

It is not my decision and as long as the thread is around, the joke will be made.

If we didn't have a farewell thread, we'd just get a shit load of "I'm leaving neo and never coming back!" threads anyways.

I have to admit, that is getting kind of annoying and used too often now. I wouldn't say ban them, but maybe give them a warning.

Should the featured entity link be turned into a general permanent link to the Community Events forum? FE won't be updated now unless someone picks the project up and it'd seem a bit silly to still be highlighting winter events in spring.
