What they are getting at is that they can be lied to very easily, obviously the chat room isn't an all-knowing source of all your personal details, but people seem to get their guard down.

I understand that it may be a little easier to lie online without facial emotions to give away anything.

But is it THAT different from IRL? Someone can put on a front and lie to you. How do you know the dude you met in the bar isn't about to drug you, rape you, or rob you as soon as you tell him where you live?

I'd say you're certainly wrong on this, for one, and are likely underestimating the potential dangers that any online contact with strangers brings.

Time and again we hear of chat rooms being used by online predators to groom young children, for example, into inappropriate relationships. It's out there, it happens and shouldn't be ignored. Here is one such recent example. There's a whole catalogue of other, similar stories.

I'd say education relating to safety online is worthwhile, especially regarding chat rooms and social networking sites. It'd be helpful if the person giving these lectures were actually able to answer questions like yours though and did come across as more tech-savvy themselves; perhaps then the credibility of such talks would be reinforced.

'Twas a normal day in the grade 10 classroom in which I drift asleep. All o a sudden, I hear the PA system go on, and for everyone to attend an assembly in the gym hall.
