You can make strange red circles appear on your screen in Facebook if you press these keys in this sequence:

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Enter key, then right click, up, down.

For Mac I believe right click = command click.

Keyboard mashing, then giving oneself a key logger to see what he/she hit? My guess is that Facebook created it then a staff member told some of his friends, and so on.
