Bear Encounter or Moment of Stupidity? |
|
Last night, I was walking along a street on my campus and deviated from the sidewalk to head to a slightly more wooded area. As my feet made noise on a somewhat tall layer of leaves, something seemingly large (I thought it was a person for a moment) suddenly moved amidst the bushes up ahead in the dark. I froze, but heard the leaves crunch periodically and a loud snorting sound twice (like a high-pitched version of someone blowing their nose). There was no voice or snickering. After slowly backing away, I left the scene without incident.
Am I being reasonable in assuming this was a bear, especially since there have been occasional, confirmed sightings on campus?

Could be a bear. I've never heard one make a sound before, so I'm not sure if the sound matches a bears M.O. I wouldn't worry too much though.

quote XanatoThat sounds more like a deer than a bear to me. The first time I heard a deer make that noise, I had no clue wtf it was. I hiiighly doubt you had a bear encounter.

But wouldn't a deer have simply hauled ass upon becoming aware that a human was nearby...or at least try to be as quiet as possible?

Not always. I've encountered them on walks before. When I first heard a deer snorting, it was like right by my balcony and it knew humans were there.
