How to quit smoking |
|
Well I need to quit smoking and I've decided to create a thread and ask how people who used to quit smoking managed to do it. I've been smoking now for about a year and a half, probably over 100-200 packs.... Yeah I know it's a bad habit and it's extremely unhealthy but I can't just seem to kick it cold turkey. I'll see someone smoking on TV or even if someone just mentions a cigarette my brain starts to think of smoking a cig so it's extremely difficult for me to quit. Any tips or ideas?

I'm a smoker, and I know how freaking hard it is to quit. I've attempted to quit twice, and the longest I've lasted was 4 months, which I thought was excellent, but then I smoked one weekend (I always smoke like 2 decks on weekends when drinking) so I basically started up again.
Nicotine patches helped me a little bit, I suggest not quitting straight off, limit your daily smokes, like cut down to a certain amount a day, say if you smoke a deck a day, smoke 20, then 15, 10, 5 and then none. It helps. ------------------- http://www.hongabonga.mybrute.com/

Try to do other relaxing things to kill your time. Maybe when you crave for a cigarette, chew a piece of gum instead.
I seriously don't know how difficult it is, but I figured it's a little more helpful then Strawberryclock's advice. ------------------- AVALITH FOR PRESIDENT ![]() AVALITH FOR PRESIDENT

there's the rubber band method. Have one on your wrist and snap it when you think of a cigarette.

Try to keep yourself busy with other things. You said that TV makes you want to, cut back on TV watching. Get a hobby. You could also contact your doctor and he maybe can give you some medication to help you stop. I've heard that works.
Well good luck. | |

I hear chewing on things like gum or a toothpick help with the craving.

Step two: I've heard good things about Nicorette. If that won't work, get addicted to an item that isn't unhealthy... or at least, to the extent of a cigarette. For example, chewing gum. ------------------- ![]()

I've tried to quit a few times, and my longest go was like 8 months. I only smoke at work, never at home. Odd.
Anyway, when I tried to quit, I just did it Cold Turkey. Obviously that didn't work out too well for me. The times that I've had good stretches of not smoking, was when I just ate Sunflower Seeds. Kept my mouth busy. Also, depending on how old you are (And I can only suppose you are over 18?), there is a new prescription drug called Chantrix that is supposed to help with cravings and whatnot. Check that out. OTC drugs like SmokeAway have been known to help, along with the nicotine gum's and patches. I still want to quit, but I find it incredibly difficult to do so. *Sigh*. Only thing we can all really do is just keep trying. We got ourselves into it, its up to us to get ourselves out. -------------------

You can always try and ween yourself off of it. Learn to smoke less and less with each day and then eventually stop altogether.
