XBox 360 Cooling
|
I didn't want to post this in the 360 section since you guys know about Power Supplies and shit. So here how it goes.
I want to add extra fans (led type) to the 360 without opening it. For now, I'm sticking to the warranty and getting it replaced by MS is priority. So I wanted to add fans on the sides to push air in to cool the bitch up. What a punk the 360 is. So basically, I wanted to use 80mm or 120mm PC LED fans to cool it down.
My question is, how can I use a power supply to power the fans? I don't want to mod my original 360. I might by a refurbished 360 to do the mods, but for now my original means too much for me. Especially with the extended warranty.
I wanted to do a liquid cooled 360, but for now the money is tight. So for the time being, fans will have to do.
How can I wire the fans to a power supply to make them work?

You would use it just like a computer. Buy a PSU, buy the fans hook it all up, turn on the PSU. Personally I think having fans all around the case won't do anything at all, they would need to be inside the case.

By the side, do you mean the bottom or top of it? Because the side vent holes arnt big enough for any type of cooling fan. If you lay your 360 down, you might beable to put 2 80mm fans on the left/bottom side of it. I bought a fan stand for my 360. It helps support it when its standing up, and has a 70mm usb powered fan to push air in from the bottom. bot it for $12 used at gamestop.
The best you can really do is keep it well ventilated. You can always crack it open and replace the rear fans, but you dont want to void your warranty.

Man, I'm talking about putting them on the bottom, sides and the top. Every hole. I'm going to cover it all. I'm leaning more on opening the dang thing. My wife keeps telling me to hold up on it,but no. I might just mod it. But for now, I want to cover it with fans.
I've seen the 12v mod with the intercooler thing. Maybe I can try that. But I want to lay it down. I dunno. I want to see how that Power Supply with fans work. I just don't know how that wiring goes.

Just take a metal twist tie or little metal wire and put it inside the pins. Connect the green wire to the black wire diagonally across and you have a hard wired psu.

Actually, you just have to connect the green wire to any black wire.
You can add an extra fan or 2, but if you go over board you may get the opposite effect you want...

I read about that shit like a couple of days ago. If you can find a good DIY steps on it, I'd do it. I read a thread on it and it looked some what simple, but I want step by step on that shit. Tweaker, I'm looking at it but not getting it. In dumb terms... I'm dumb like that.

no cooling will happen unless you have air going in one end and comming out the other, if air goes in all ends you're wasting your money and time.

Lol um basically your telling the psu to stay on because the main sensor wire is grounded. So basically you got a mini power supply that has molex for your fans and you dont have to void your warranty.

Well, the 360 pushes the air out from the back correct? That's where the 2 fans are located. So those fans are the ones that pull out the air from the box if I'm right. Can't I add fans to the bottom/right of the 360 and another one on the top/left of it? That would push air into the 360 and have the back fans pull out the air from the inside. Would that work? Also, how does that Nyko Intercooler work? If the 360 uses the back fans to pull the air, wouldn't the Intercooler pull instead of push? Cause if it pushes air in, wouldn't that be an issue? quote Tweaker

the rear fans on the 360 are exhaust; they pull the hot air out. the nyko air cooler is just 3 more exhaust fans. I think its pretty pointless since its basicly putting 3 fans ontop of 2, making the 360's built in fans pointless. You can only put so many fans on it until you get the opposite effect that you want. From what I've seen on the inside of the 360, the only other place you can put additional fans is at the bottom of it (the bottom when you stand it up). I have something like this on my 360. It helps support it when it stands up, and pushes air in from the bottom up through the 360. How many watts is the power supply? You can put a lot of fans on a power supply if thats the only thing thats going to be running. Why are you wanting to put so many fans on it anyways? The 360 does get hot; everyones does. But if your getting the red ring from over heating, then I can see adding another fan or something, but I think your going to go overboard with this...

The bottom/right side is where I figured I could put the fans on. I really want to cool down the 360 as much as possible. I saw a mod on the pelican 360 stand. I think it only has one fan in but the mod has 3. Maybe I can also mod it so it can hold the 3 fans and put them at 12v. Can the 3 fans work with 12v? This is the link.As for the power supply, I wouldn't mind something that would hold up the fans for the mod, maybe 3 or 4 fans the most.

re: XBox 360 Cooling

There is room in there for 2 more fans, but not enough air flow. If you look at the bottom of it, theres hardly enough slots for 3 fans to supply enough air flow. If you cut out half the bottom, and raise it up a bit, then there would be some room.
I was at gamestop a few weeks ago, and they had a newer version of the pelican rear fan thing. It was powered by USB, and had every xbox connector on the back of it, so instead of buying each $40 cable, all you had to do was use a regular AV male to male cable to plug it in. I cant find a picture of it, but you can see if theres one at a nearby gamestop/ebgames.
I still think adding a power supply, and a bunch of fans is going to be a bit over kill for it. How long do you even play it at a single sitting?
