	Log in to remove this advertisement Heya. I just bought an external 3TB hard drive. I'm not planning on using it for backup. I actually want to put my music collection in it (my collection is big because I rip everything in lossless - But that's another story for another time). The reason I chose an external hard drive for this instead of an internal one is because I'm planning on replacing my desktop computer for an iMac sometime this year. I have a lot of data in my life and I wouldn't like to fill the iMac's drive with it. So is it a safe thing to do? I'm googling about this but I'd like your opinions. Most people seem to suggest it's safe as long as you plug it in a power surge, which I do have. help -------------------

	As long as its ventilated and wont get too hot it will be fine. External hard drives are just internal hard drives stuck in an external enclosure. It should also have some sort of power save built in where it spins down the drive which helps save power/life/heat. BTW, if you have any of the following connectors available to use, these are the ones you should use from fastest to slowest: eSATA, USB3, Firewire, USB. -------------------
