HA! The SMP core allowed me to catch a problem in one of my systems that has probably gone unnoticed for some time, and would have otherwise gone unnoticed for who knows how long. The system is a year and a half old roughly, and I have had a Corsair H50 installed in it since day one. I stopped running Core Temp on that machine a long time ago because there was nothing to worry about. Just out of curiosity I decided to fire core temp up today while I was running both the GPU and SMP cores. To my horror I found the CPU was at 90 deg. C. It is idling at 60deg C, which is worse than the i7 machine sitting next to it that has a stock HSF installed in it at the moment. There are a lot of hard drives in the machine, which could be raising the ambient temp, but I am not sure. At least now I know about the problem though. Doesn't look like I will be running SMP until I figure it out. Hopefully a day or 2.

It might be dust build up on the back of the radiator. There is also another machine that sits right next to it, and I could be getting a little positive feedback loop, where exhaust from the other machine, gets used as intake air for the machine in question. I'll sort it out and get SMP running on this machine again. I have GPU2 running though; plus I have SMP and GPU3 running on two other machines for the time being at least. One with a GTX 580 and the other with a GTX 275.

i think it had something like 'requires fermi' between parenthesis. maybe it does work, but the more advanced features arent being used.

So right now I am running SMP on 2 Quad-Cores, GPU 2 on 2 machines and GPU 3 on one machine with a GTX 580. One of the machines running GPU 2 has a GTX 275 in it. I originally thought GPU 3 was only suitable for 500 series NVIDIA cards, but I think I misread it. Can anyone a) confirm that I could be running GPU3 on the machine with the GTX 275, and b) does anyone know if GPU3 would get me more points than I am currently getting running GPU2? ...trying to figure out if I can make the switch, and if making the switch is worth it.

Issues specific to the GPU3/NV Clients


New client
A new client will be needed to access GPU3 WUs. This new client will report the CUDA level to the assignment server, so it can assign around machines with less capable CUDA levels. Note that "assigning around" the issue also means that if your client can't do the work available, it won't be assigned a WU, so it's best to make sure your CUDA drivers are reasonably updated. We feel this is better than giving a WU which will crash the core, etc.


What hardware does the new client/core support?

This list comprises most of the hardware supported by NVIDIA's CUDA. However, for best performance, we recommend the more recent series (GeForce G*). Due to the complexities of CUDA support on older hardware, we may likely depreciate support for the older boards.


GPU species not recognized.
This message indicates the GPU3 client is unable to detect an appropriate hardware driver. Please verify an nVidia driver of the required version level is installed. See CUDA table below. If the error persists, try to uninstall and reinstall the driver. On some systems, a Driver Cleaner utility may be necessary.


The core can't find the DLL's!
We've been seeing some unusual behavior with virus scanners. We are looking into this. For now, reboot and give it a second try and it should work.


The client displays an error saying that I do not have a supported GPU, but I do!!!
Please make sure your driver is CUDA capable (for NVIDIA cards) and that your GPU board is the primary display board. With the rollout of the new GPU3/OpenMM-based core (core15) for NVIDIA GPU clients, we will need donors to make sure their CUDA level is least CUDA 2.2, but ideally 2.3 or the most recent. To know which version of CUDA you have, you can find out based on your driver version:

CUDA 2.0: 177.35+
CUDA 2.1: 180.60+
CUDA 2.2: 185.85+
CUDA 2.3: 190.38+
CUDA 3.0/OpenCL: 195.36+



A DLL error dialog box is popping up -- what's up with that?
If the DLL error pops up, go to the installed location, C:\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu by default, and make sure the cudart.dll ended up there with the FahCore_11.exe file. If not, do a file search (including hidden and system files/folders) and copy the file to the needed location.

a PS3 is able to run F@H just like a computer would. theres nothing more to it really. its just as if you were running F@H with your video card.

also, ive started running the SMP client.

Over time, the thermal paste wears out. Reapply it and you will be fine if you don't use too much. Way too little = high temps. Overapplying = high temps. I spread it over the whole CPU, myself, and a little on the heatsink where it will be touching. I put the CPU in the socket, and sit the heatsink over it and turn it 45 - 90 degrees both ways to really fill any grooves. Then I lock the heatsink in without lifting it back off. Maximum heat transfer :-D

Have you tried "Installation for a multi-GPU system (Systray Version)" from here?

"SLI or Crossfire does not have to be disabled to run the GPU client. However, SLI and CF cannot be used to make a dual GPU card or cards perform like one super GPU. The SLI and CF link does not have enough bandwidth to support that functionality. Run one FAH GPU client for each GPU chip."

So, it seems as if two F@H clients are necessary even for one video card with dual cores.
