Should I buy this computer...
|
I have a $1500 budget for a gaming PC, and that price includes a monitor. I was thinking about getting this http://www.slacocomputer.com/systems.shtml but thought I'd get some input before purchasing anything. If anyone thinks they could put together a better system for the price, that would be appreciated. I live in Canada so parts would need to be from ncix.com or newegg.ca, thanks. Sorry it's the SOLERIA - 9420 i7 930 at the bottom. This message was merged with other messages by The Slayer (moderator)

Are those prices (the ones in your link and your budget) in Canadian or American dollars?
It looks like a decent build, but at the same time seems a bit much. You could probably go with the 8425 and save $500 and have similar performance. You could even upgrade the ram yourself and later on the video card and still save some money...

Website lists the systems are priced in CAD as well. The biggest worry in the i7 930 system is the PSU, while I think Antec can build a nice PSU it seems like a 930 + 5850 would heavily tax that thing under use. :/ 5850 (idle/load) 139w / 305w i7 930 (idle/load) 124w / 216w So while idle you can boot safely at 263w (not including mobo/ram/hdd/etc) it seems like you'd leap right over tolerances in any heavy gaming at 521w just on those two components. *Listed PSU on website is a 500w in the Sonata case Also biggest worry on the 8425 is the GT240 that performs under a 8800GT and in this instance they don't even list the PSU brand or rating. ^check the 12v rail amperage. how much is it?
and OP, any chance i can convince you to build your own computer instead? cheaper.

Also if the system uses 521w load the 22A 12V 1 and 2 rails don't matter much. Antec from the last time I checked with the Quattro series still rates their PSU's by Max / Peak power not RMS which means the unit is most likely doing about 460W. As we know it's better to be slightly under the power rating instead of over as the longevity of the PSU is compromised and a blowout is probably the least wanted thing for any DIY user.

5850 (idle/load) 139w / 305w
i7 930 (idle/load) 124w / 216w The TDP of a 5850 is ~150 watts, so unless that is a gross underestimation of the cards power usage then I'm not convinced that 305W represents what the card itself would use. Similiar story for the i7-930. I do agree with you however that 500 watts is a bit low for a system with a 5850. I guess I would like an explanation of the numbers you stated.

~550 or 600 watts would be plenty for a power supply. you might be able to get away with considerably less if you have a high quality power supply, but i wouldnt risk it.

Just sampling the numbers from the Wattage estimate from Neoseeker reviews on the card and I had to get the 930 wattage from bit-tech as we don't have a review of it. neoseekerbit-tech

The most noticable reason is that the idle power consumption for the 5870's are incredibly high. It idles at 27w. The actual power consumption of a 5870 is about 190w at load on games and about 200w load on a stress tester. The 5850 should be about 165-170w load in games. The i7 930 should be around the same 125-135 that the i7 920 is. It could run on a good quality 500w but if you want to take in capacitor aging and with the price budget a second card possibly I'd go with a high quality 650w or a 750w of decent quality. I'll have a build up a little later. Any preference on monitor size OP? And is the operating system being added into the build as well?
