Graphene Chips - 1000x faster than current chips?

Interesting, I can see this showing up in smaller devices for maybe the medical, education or science fields but not sure about home PCs any any PC actually.

Though I can't imagine a cell phone of sorts having 1000x the power of a PC, to take pictures? to make a 3-way call? to open your email? nah I don't see a cell phone being that fast unless your playing World of Warcraft on your cell then there isn't no reason for it.

Though I can see this showing up in the development area like super high rises or extreme high speed rails where super fast calculations are needed to make a faster then split second judgement.

Seems a tad hopeful, but even just a jump of 10x would be very significant, but if they actually jumped it to 1000x, and added it to desktops, discrete GPUs would perhaps become a thing of the past, since the CPU would have so much power to spare, there would be little point to them.

IF they could use this to enhance GPUs significantly, we'd start seeing some REALLY epic games (no, not the publisher....Well, them too sure XD). Developers would no longer be hindered by practical limitations, since even a handheld device could be strong enough to play something like Crysis with no slowdown whatsoever, while simultaneously running any number of other CPU heavy programs.

In point of fact, with 1000x boost, it would be down to other hardware that would cause problems. Once SSDs are improved significantly, we'd have games that can look true to life, assuming the developers put in the work (which would be a lot though).

The more far reaching implications though, are advances to medicine (simulations, like in those in Folding@home, could be done much faster, which would give important results sooner, which leads to cures being developed at an accelerated pace), and successive miniaturization of components.

Could make devices like those seen in sci-fi shows/movies a reality. For example, the minority report 'glass computers', could happen, and datapads in Star Trek, etc.

I mean, we have OLEDS, which already allow for paper thin displays. Combine that with superpowered processors, and we could basically hold an advanced computer in the palm of our hand, and roll it up and stick it in a pocket when we don't need it.

Basically, as big a leap as the vacuum tube to silicon was, back in the day.

Not really sure exactly how much smaller these processors can be, compared to current silicon chips, but if you can have 1000x the processing power for about the same size, you can have 10x the processing power at a fraction of the size, I would think (not sure how the scaling would go though. It might not scale well.).

Sounds like producing them is either going to be painstakingly slow or incredibly costly, not the silicon wafers are cheap to produce or get a plant up and running for them.

IBM really should work on their powerpoint/pdf skills though... Hell, I've made better stuff and I've used PP maybe a half dozen times.

Also, if the thing is put on something mobile, and we stressed it for a while, wouldn't the heat burn your hand? Since I don't think they make fans for mobile devices like phones.

Won't they just need to make a new kernel from scratch? (I'm not saying its easy to make a kernel.)

maybe it's a smart idea to hold off on buying a new computer for now.
