Computer Advice
|
Alright, so I'm looking at buying a computer, and as such, I've been building my own through a reputable website. I've bought from them 8 years ago, and the computer has lasted this far. However, I think it is time for an upgrade, and not just a little one, but one that will last me at least another 10 years.
So, tell me, would this computer be a good one for say high-performance gaming and video editing?

Oh, and I'm completely comfortable with the price, before any of you lambast me for it
Thoughts?

Not bad for video editing but pretty mid range for gaming, namely the video card. You didnt read the part that said quote Comp Build
For a better gaming experience upgrade the GRAPHICS card before upgrading the RAM or CPU did you? XD More seriously though that's not going to do well for high performance gaming. That's incredibly overpriced for the parts that go into it, Subtract everything from the computer itself and that's a 1k build at best You should really build your own, for that price you could get a beast of a computer. The processor isnt bad. I'll draw up a build in a minute to show you what you could have compared to that. Edit: Ah, *bleep* didn't realise you were in australia... one second. And I had a whole build setup too lol Edit: Mar 28, 10

That'd be great, thanks
Oh, and that's in Aussie dollars too, so if you could do a comparison with that, it'd be great ;D

I know parts are extremely pricey in Australia but that still seems really expensive for the parts you are getting; Where is the website based?

It's based in Australia, and included in that price is a 2 year warranty.
A few things that put me off building my own:
1: I don't know how to build one 2: I don't know what parts to use 3: I don't know where to source these parts 4: I'm not sure if parts ordered overseas won't fry when plugged into Australian power (240V)
So yeah

Well here's your best bet for prices, msy.com.au they dont have individual pages for each item though. Anyone mind putting up a build? I need to get to sleep here. I'll post one in the morning or critique whatever build is posted then.

Alright, I've gone and done some research (whether it is good research or not, I'm not sure), and here is what I came up with:
Case Motherboard, CPU and RAM Graphics Card HDD CD-DVD Drive Power Supply Windows 7 Additional Fan Monitor Mouse and Keyboard Speakers
The only thing that I'm confused about is the connections. Do I need a cable to connect the motherboard to the HDD and the USB ports in the case?
Mind you, I'm looking at about $1,100 all up so far, which I think is fantastic!

So yeah I am not criticizing you; and I am not criticizing the site; I just don't like to see people over-pay for things. I just wonder if you couldn't do better... I am pretty sure you pay no VAT on completed computers; but you do pay VAT on computer parts if the package value is greater than $1000. Which at least from my level of understanding; is why parts are so expensive...Most importers are going to import more than $1000 worth of parts at a time. Shipping a computer to Australia from the US is roughly $300 US; which is a lot; but I still think you could import that computer completely built for less than your total...even with the 2 year warranty. You bring up a good point though about running off 240V. I know a lot of Americans bring a 120V to 240V converter with them when they travel abroad; and I don't know why this wouldn't work. You could probably find one relatively inexpensively. I don't know that they do this on power supplies; but a lot of other small appliances that we buy in the US have a 120\240V switch built into the back of the machine; I assume they do that so they only have to design one model to sell worldwide. Regardless; a 120 to 240 volt converter should work/

The biggest thing that concerns me is just not knowing what parts to get. I think I could probably survive building it, but I couldn't be sure if it was all compatible with each other.

For $2000 Australian I would go for something like this; I am not sure what the exchange rate is, plus what the going rate for parts are there and\or what it would cost to get them; so I left some room;
CPU - Intel Core i7 930 @ 2.8Ghz CPU Cooling - Cooler Master V8 or Corsair H50 Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard - ASUS P6X58D Premium Memory - 6Gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 CAS 7 Graphics - ASUS Radeon HD 5870 Primary Hard Disk - 1Tb Western Digital Caviar Black Case - Cooler Master HAF 922 Power Supply - Corsair CMPSU-650HX Modular Power Supply Optical Drives - LG 8X Blu-ray Burner (16X DVD +\- RW)
You could do something like this; and I am guessing for around the same price shipped... It would offer a lot more performance.
I buy wholesale; so I can't get you links right now... plus it is late; Those parts should work together just fine though;

check for your parts here. its not a pretty page, but the prices are dirt cheap in comparison. also, use a price engine like Shopbot. enter the model number of your hardware, and the price engine will look around for online pages where the part is being sold.
