Intel's first six-core processor for desktops on sale - The i7 980X

talk about some serious overkill, I mean literally overkill I barely broke into the dual core CPUs last year since 90% of the apps out only use 2 cores any way hardly any take up the 4 cores and 6 is just insane lol

nah, probably maximum 140 watts. i say 140 because the first phenom 965 was 3.2 ghz and 140 watts, but the i7's run on a newer architecture which has some power savings in it. and im still taking into account the extra two cores.

well, so does the i7 975. and according to newegg, its actually 130 watts...although thats rather confusing, isnt it?

Because the chip is built on 32nm manufacturing process. The first batch of Core i7 are 45nm.

Smaller process = less heat
Less heat = more transistors
More transistors = more cores
More cores = faster

no, just the 980x is on the 32nm, not the 975.

Wouldnt be the first time intel hit about $1500 for their top model though. Completely overkill for gaming but those extra cores could be sweet for other programs.

I doubt a few years but within a year or two the 6 core will be usefull for gamers since even next year 8-12 cores should be coming out. Unreal engine 4 is supposed to be compatible with massive amounts of cores but that wont be out for a few more years.
