re: Folding @ Home II |

I tried propping up my laptop and few other things but could not get my gpu to stay below 84C. It crashed a 24%. Is there a way I could get the folding program to use only 70-80 percent of my gpu's power so it wont be stressed as much.

Bingo! When you set it up there's an option when you can allow it to use anywhere between 5-100% of the core. I cant remember off hand if it was in something like preferences in the graphical client as I'm using the console personally. But there is something that will let you manipulate that, just look around for it.

I tried the core priority but it does not seem work its still running full throttle. I tried both ends they don't make a difference. This is strange because I have to play Crysis for about 4 hours before it gets in the 80's. Most games I play stay in the mid 70's. I got up to 92C with this.

Yeah games don't peg computer chips at 100% at all time. FAH does.

Rarely do I see a game push my HD3850 AGP passed 70%. HL2 mods hold around 30 - 50%. Devil May Cry 4 (Demo) is the ONLY game I've seen hold my GPU at 100% through the whole demo. Of course, the CPU is maxed in all games. F@H maxes the GPU out, too, all the time (if PC is undisturbed).
Want to monitor your GPU usage? If you have ATI, ATI Tray Tools is awesome. Show's GPU usage and free vram. ------------------- C2D e6420 @ 3.0ghz 4GB DDR2 @ 936mhz HD4870 512MB

Head's up for you guys with ATI cards: catalyst 9.2, which just came out, now supports multi-gpu setups for folding.

i am not folding with the ps3.it takes 6-7 hrs for one unit and yeilds about 250 points.it only folds when you are in that area,so you cannot play games or movies while you fold.
i am looking into installing linux on it and setting it up to fold that way as i have read that it can be done. i will keep everyone informed as to how it works. -------------------

I thought the PS3 was WAY faster than the average computer at folding. You sure you have it dialed in right?

re: Folding @ Home II |

PS3 was the 'shit' (at least to the PS3 owners) when all there was for folding was either a CPU client or a PS3 client. The PS3's beat what everyone had done with their CPU's in a matter of no time. So, they bragged, and made it into something it wasn't.
When GPU folding for PC's came out, the PS3 guys quit talking in the holier than thou sense, and it kind of got dropped. It's hard to beat a good GPU for folding. Actually, impossible if you got the right ones. BTW, not all PS3 guys are like that, but google it, and you'll see the flaming they gave us for using our CPU's and them outdoing EVERYONE's CPU WU's in no time with 1/3 or less the users. Kspiess will make them shut up for us. I've seen him get 6000-8000 ppd through my monitoring site. Me, I used to average 4,000 ppd a day, but I can't do it anymore. Don't know what happened. Lucky to get 3,000 these months. It's in the drivers. Oh well, I'll be 3rd here in a day, maybe I can hold it for a bit. Nice to see all the participation. ------------------- C2D e6420 @ 3.0ghz 4GB DDR2 @ 936mhz HD4870 512MB
