Why do you think this game is so popular?

I'd say it's because you have so much freedom when you fight in the game. Another reason is because all of Nintendo's characters are in the game. It's also addicting, fun, exciting, full of surprises, excellent music, and the graphics for all of the characters are exquisitely amazing!

I think it's because of the new characters and all the extra stuff that they have added on to it.

I think it is popular because of the multiplayer. You could literally kill your friends for hours on this game.

Because lots of people who likes the GameCube also likes this game.

Lots of characters, items, and stages. Many modes of play. Customizeability (is that even a word?). Plenty of secrets to unlock. And all the features put together allow for endless creating of battle scenarios. The gameplay has both action and on-the-fly strategy. Four-player simultaeneous play, and a tournament mode to allow many people to test their skills at once. The graphics are great, and the levels are well-designed and interesting to explore. Wrap it all up, and you've got the giant pile of fun we call Melee.

Hmmm... Maybe because it's an awesome game...

Because of the good Gameplay, music, and the wide variation in characters.
