Are People from Mexico Americans because of the continent, Or do you refer to them as being Mexican Same with Canadians Are they American being in the continent?

Well its the exact same thing to do with Asians, Indians and all that!

i can see what ya mean. there are vast differences between middle east countrys and that compared to china and japan and that.

but if ya look at the people towards the east end of russia they look very asian so wouldn't it be fair to call that end of russia part of asia?

Going on Neoseeker a lot has nothing to do with this debate. And the way you say it, it sounds more like an insult, even though you deny it. I suggest you stop bringing up irrelevant things, and I suggest everyone to try and stop eating them up and instead try and gather everything that has some value and look at that (I'm not saying that anyone is really doing that, but it seems that way to me, but probably only me. If its not true than I understand, but just try to avoid doing it)

Well, actually, Indians consider themselves Asian. They might call themselves Indian, but that's probably the same for Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, all other oriental people. A Chinese person would call himself 'Chinese' when talking to someone, and most of the time not 'Asian', just like everybody else.

Oh, and if you are offended by the word 'oriental' then I think you should try and deal with it as in other place it isn't considered a racial slur of any type and is actually a proper way to classify certain people. The U.S. isn't the world. And I actually never knew that oriental is considered a racial slur in the U.S. as long as I was living there. My oriental friends and other American friends would use the term too.

Please, don't look at any of what I'm saying as attacks. I'm saying what I think is true and what I think should happen. Look at the meaning and don't try to defend yourself. I'm not trying to say this in a way that I assume you will, if it sounded like that ...

We shouldn't start getting mad at each other if someone else doesn't agree to what we say. Yeah, its a bit natural, but I think it'd be best to hold it inside for the sake of the debate.

I would consider Mexicans Central American, and people in the US and Canada North.

Being 100% indian, I consider myself Asian, and yes we are Asian, it doesn't seem like it to others, because the typical view of being Asian is being Chinese or Japanese, but I fill out the boxes as Asian.


RPG's right though, it's pretty obvious we are Asian, I mean if you want to be specific than go ahead, but saying Asian works just as well.

Actually, Chinese people refer to themselves as Chinese or Asian. They never refer to Indians as Asians. I could write out the literal translations, but not many people would understand or care.

And as for the American census, Deis, I don't know why you continue to use that in your argument when I clearly stated that many Indian Americans are petitioning to have their own ethnic group within the census. Your own people even agree with me, at least in the US. The US isn't the world, but neither is the UK. You cannot justify a racial slur on the basis of it "being ok in the UK". The East Asians who don't find the world Oriental offensive have probably never heard of orientalism, but that would be their fault for being uneducated on this certain topic.

Kafani, if you can use the fact that a minority of Indian's wish to be separate from you (and I'm not surprised that you know people like that), then surely it's equally relevant to point out that many East Asians do not consider Oriental an insult? Some South Asian's want one thing, some another. Some East Asian's hold one opinion, others don't.

The fact is that everyone in Asia is Asian, no matter how you blather on about the word is used colloquially, and that everyone else is wrong, despite your opinion being that of a minority. Cry me a river.</sub>
