Second-hand Smoking

I'm embarrassed of myself for not starting a thread about this earlier -_- and was quite shocked there wasn't already one when I checked

Before I overwhelm you with links of references and articles on second hand smoke, and the myth around the harm of SHS, let's get some opinions out.

Personally, I can hardly stand the smell of smoke and if I have to walk by a smoker I'll hold my breath till I'm certain I'm far enough to not have to smell the stink any more. It's not an issue of health, although in my mind I have convinced myself it is harmful for me, but it's just that I can't stand the smell of cigarettes/cigars/tobacco. I have no idea how smokers can be okay with their clothes stinking of it all the time.

First ammendment, second ammendment, human rights, whatever... I'm all for a smoke free enviornment because if, for whatever reason, someone tried to get a following for eating shit and carrying it around in public we'd outlaw that too. (Ok, not really. Let people smoke, don't make it illegal in public buildings, but smokers should be a little more mindful of the people around them. The fact is: If there is no smoke in the air, no one is bothered. If there is some smoke in the air, some people might be bothered.)

I don't mean everyone in at a bar should stop smoking because there is one non-smoker. Simply that if you're in a mall, for example, where the smell of smoke lingers and plenty of people walk by... smoke outside, not because it's illegal or unhealthy, but just as a common courtesy.

Whatever. I'm going a little off-topic.

So I hate smoke, I can't stand "second-hand smoking", but I've read pieces that have claimed SHS is more harmful than first hand smoking. and there are people who believe this too. I mean, C'monc how gullible can you be?

Gah, there are too many conflicting studies going on about second hand smoking, but apparently some people seem to be dying from it... isn't that proof enough that it exists? Or do you think those people were simply lying and they weren't dying at all?

(I'm reffering to some commercials that were going on about SHS)

I'm with you on that. Farting should be outlawed.

That is exactly how I feel about farting.

To chesterdoodle: Why do you feel the need to treat smokers like crap? Why not just ask them to move or move yourself? That's what I do when someone farts.

What I hate though, is even if I hold my breathe past someone smoking, it still lingers next me, so when I gasp for air, the smoke rushes into my mouth and nostrils.

I even smell smoke in non-smoking sections of restaurants; it is the curse of having a sensitive nose.

Farting not deadly? I guess you've never lit a fart before .

I live in Ottawa, Ontario(Canada), and this city has quite a few laws about smoking in public places, like restaurants and inside malls(outside the mall is fine). It is pretty sucessful, and convinient. The whole province, though, isn't like this, only Ottawa(and maybe a few other cities).

Just because I don't want to delete about half the posts in this thread, making it so confusing it's unreadable, I'm going to give a warning. Drop the silly comments. Until you can prove that smoking is a necessary bodily function, the fart argument is null and void.
