None of the planets should ever get close enough to earth to hit it... Ever! No planet in our solar system has intersecting orbit with earth and therefore it would take a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions to throw one of them off balance enough to even get close to another. If that were to happen though there would still be an infinitesimally small chance of the 'wild' planet veering into another, it would simply just be sucked into the sun or out of the solar system.

Uh, funny you should mention this, since I just finished reading a great book called The Twelfth Planet by a guy named Zecharia Sitchen. Sitchen is world reknowned linguist who has devoted his life to the study of ancient near-eastern text, specifically the Sumerian civilization, which happens to be the oldest advanced civilization on Earth, dating back to about 4000 BC. According to Sitchen's work, the Sumerians had a highly advanced cosmology. They knew about all of the planets in the solar system (modern astronomers did not discover Pluto until 1930!), and had a very interesting take on the creation of the Earth, one that parallels the creation story told in Genesis (after all, the Sumerian texts predate and are probably the source of the Old Testament).

According to the Sumerian creation story, during the formation of our solar system there was a planet that used to be in between Mars and Jupiter where the asteroid belt is now (Bode's Law, which governs orbital distances of celestial bodies, definitely supports this). The Sumerian texts name this planet Tiamat, and in the Bible it is called Tehom . At some point in the early formation of the system a rogue planet called Nibiru was drawn into our solar system and collided with Tiamat in what the Sumerians called the Celestial Battle . What was not spread out to become the asteroid belt (the firmament, or hammered bracelet of Genesis) was kicked into a lower orbit and became the Earth. The Bible speaks of this event also, talking about "Tehom, the haughty one whom the LORD cleaved".

Now I know this all sounds nuts, but there is both scientific and Biblical evidence that supports the Sumerian legend. There is so much to this story, in fact, that I will not continue to drone on about it here. Suffice it to say that The Twelfth Planet (so named because the Sumerians counted the sun and moon as celestial bodies, so 9 planets + sun + moon=11, 11 + Nibiru = 12 planets)is an absolutely AMAZING book, along with its companion volume, Genesis Revisited. Highly recommended for anyone interested in planetary collisions and ancient astronomy.

I know that this is tru and am definately looking forward to August to come. CNN.com had an article on this issue. Man I am psyched for August to come. Oh wait, August starts on Friday!!!

You are right, I don't think that could happen. I was just giving a thought. But what about the sun? Do you think the sun could somehow get closer to earth? Close enough to actually heat it up and kill everything on earth? This has a slight chance of happen. But even though we have enough nuk to blow up a planet, do you actually think we could blow up the sun? The sun is a billion times bigger then the earth.

There's no way to blow up the sun, because it's already exploding as we speak! It's been bursting with nuclear blasts ever since it was created!

And about Mars, when it's millions of miles away, there's no chance of it hitting earth. If that was possible, the moon would already have hit!

I just don't understand where you came up with the idea of Earth reaching the sun. Don't you think that would have happened a few billion years ago if that was possible?

If the sun were too explode then we're all dead, for sure. We can't live with light. Also, if it were to explode huge pieces of it will come crashing down to earth destroying part/ or all of everything that is living (the earth included). But I don't think this is possible within the next billion years.

But maybe, this can be the prediction of a 1600's psychic - the wraith of jesus (meaning the sun) will set fire to the entire earth destroying every life existing in the planet. ::..Scary..::

About Mars, I think it is slightly affecting us. Because we have had quite a few storms in our area for many days in a row ever since August started....and the only thing I can think of that's causing it...is Mars.

It was raining yesterday and then a BIG storm just passed by us. By the way, can we see Mars in the sky yet?

Well, it's August, and Earth still exists...So, I'd have to disagree with you on that. I can't really say much more without going into religious talk...

Also, did you guys know that if Earth was just a smidge closer to the sun, we'd all burn up? And if we moved just a smidge farther away, then we'd all freeze? Isn't the system amazing? We're positioned in the PERFECT distance from the sun our ENTIRE revolution around it...

Thats not nmessesarily true Sspider, it's true that if the earth did move even 10cm's in either direction it would have catastrophic consequenses..but thats not an extinction level event..there's whats refered to as "The goldy-locks zone" This is a band from venus's orbit to mar's orbit.

This is the zone by which we 'could' live. if the earth started out a little closer to where venus is now..there wouldn't be too much difference in our overall civilisation, as in that universal balence the earth would adapt naturally to allow life to flourish. the same can be said for if earth started out closer to where mas is now, there would'nt be much difference as in we'd all die.

we'd adapt quite well. but if earth was out of the "goldy-locks zone" then life would find it extremely hard indeed. this would cause an extinction level event and wipe out the human species.

so you see, the solar system is extremely delecate but also extremely adaptive. we would feel ill effects for a few million years..but the planet would as always find a way around it.

This go's for global warming too, we are heating the earth up. so the polar ice caps melt, releasing huge amounts of water. which would disrupt the oceanic conveyor (an huge underwater flow of colder,denser water) which would cause the climate to crash into another ice age. the planet would come out of it after a few thousand years and be little worse off. it all balences itself out in it's own way. (though this is not a good idea to test the theory!)

kind of makes you think that there just might have been some intelligence behind the creation of the cosmos...if you take a good hard look, it's a masterpiece of natural engineering.
