Harbin pretty much shut down your self-powered engine theory. I suppose if you could create an isolated energy source that replicated itself you could probably create something self-sustaining enough to power an engine. I'm thinking maybe bacteria of some sort, but meh- we're probably years/decades/centuries from something like that.
