Are we alone?

Do you guys think that we are the only little blue speck of life in the universe, or are there more than one life sustaining planet out there in the cosmos? What do you guys think would happen to our social and political systems if we intercepted an alien transmission from another planet out there?

The reason I ask this, is I've always wondered about it. We humans have never faced an outside threat to us as a whole. We are much like the native americans when Columbus landed in the new world, Separated and we don't really like each other. It would then be just as easy for an alien threat to crush our armies and defense systems because we designed those armies to fight and defend ourselves from each other. Spain easily crushed the strongest empires in the north and south america's without having to raise an army to do it. English settlers(farmers, religious people, and etc) were able to drive native american's off there land with just the guns they brought with them. So in other words if an alien race were to come here they wouldn't need an army to defeat us.... they would be so much more advanced it would be like Goliath vs an ant.

So what if the alternate was true? We've scanned the cosmos for more than 50 years for any signs of intelligent life and havn't heard a peep from anyone... if there was any intelligent life in a 50 light year radius around the earth emitting a radio signal we would've heard by now. Some scientist think that we are looking in the right places but not looking correctly, or this eerie silence means that we are the only ones in the universe. What would it mean for us to be the only intelligent life in the universe? I for one would think it's very boring no one to talk to but ourselves... But it's far too early to draw any conclusions, for example if you were to take a cup and scoop up some water from a lake or the ocean and it didn't contain any fish, are you going to say that there are no fish in the ocean or lake? even if you don't find any complex life there's bound to be single celled organisms in the cup...

I'd be more surprised if there isn't other life somewhere out there. Considering the size of the Universe though, it's entirely possible that there's an alien planet exactly like ours, the same age, with the same technological advances as us, looking for other life out there. Maybe evolution would take a slightly different course than ours? Maybe they'd be bunny people instead of chimp people?

Are there animals from a different planet? Probably.

Can they talk to us? Probably not. They're probably made up of different chemicals in different patterns and make different noises.

Who cares? Unless they want to fight, let's just smoke or something.

It is likely there will be life somewhere in the Universe. Considering the fact that there is one planet we know of for sure that is capable of supporting life and has living things on it, chances are that other planets capable of supporting life will have life on it. If not, that means Earth is just an anomoly, which scientists hate.

Who on earth is to say that, all attempts of contact them will be successful... considering how long it took life on Earth to develop to the point of creating a microchip and sending out massive signals, means that other planets with life on might not have even developed past single-celled organisms yet... even then, there is no guaruntee they're planet has the materials needed for such technological advancement, or if our signals will be detected for centuries, and the fact that it will be impossible for aliens to even know what 'Hello, we're from Earth' even means.

Even with the size of the Universe though, who's to say we'll even meet them? It takes light billions of years for light to get from one side to the other, since we don't even have faster than light travel (not even anywhere close to coming near the speed of light), it'll take millenia for us to reach them.

Do I think there is life elsewhere in the Universe? Yes.
Contact them? Not for centuries atleast, millenia.

We're obviously not alone. The idea that we are is absurd to me.

Of course we're not alone. Somewhere out there, in the hundreds of billions of galaxies, orbiting those innumerable amounts of stars, has got to be intelligent life on some planetary body. The conditions for our planet may be perfect, but who's to say that can't be possible somewhere else in this vast universe? Our universe is currently estimated to be nearly 14 billion light years in diameter, rapidly expanding faster than we can comprehend.

Given the size of the observable universe it is possible that there may be life somewhere out there. That revelation would not be anywhere near as significant for the human race if we one day find out we are actually on the only planet in the known universe that sustains life. Also it's not beyond the realm of possibilities that an alternate or parallel universe exists that may contain life other than that found on Earth.

As for the second question it's very difficult to speculate but suffice to say it would have far reaching consequences about how we view the universe and indeed ourselves.
