I have an aquaintence whom I hang out with at lunch during school, we'll call him John Doe,nand its like his emotions are off. We hang out by a stairwell and see a decent amount of people walking by. Now when someone walks by my aquaintences and I try not to say anything inappropriate, since it is mostly teachers and school board members that walk by, but John Doe yells whatever he is thinking and most of the time it is inappropriate. We(the other aquaintences and I) always tell him he has no shame, but after some thinking it is starting to look like he is missing some important emotion to tell him that is wrong. He is not an extrovert and does not have excessive amounts of courage, nor is he mentally handicapped(although he is on the duller side of the scale). It is not just in the stairwell either it is pretty much everywhere. My question is: Is he missing some important emotion that teaches him self control and humility, and if so what would it be? I have looked at shame and I don't think that is it. Also, he thinks he is better than everyone else, is rather annoying, does disgusting things in public, and tries really hard to break people down to his level. Sorry for the wall of text, (please power throught and try to read it, thanks) but I am rather confused and I don't know why I hang out with him.

	It sounds as though it's more than curiosity. You trying to find out his thought process, what makes him tick and through that understand him better. I'm not a psychiatrist, but from what you say, he sounds as though he has a superiority complex though what that stems from I have no idea. It's also possible he's trying to fish for attention, the loud outbursts, inapropriate though they may seem, are possibly his way of reaching out to others. He wants to be noticed, you and your friends seem to give him that attention and he revels in it. Well, I don't think he wants attention because we have several conversations throughout the day and he always tries to hide in the back of the room during class to avoid getting picked on to answer questions by the teacher. He isn't very lonely as he has a good amount of acquaintances and friends. And I'm not to sure about his family. When we tell him he has no shame for yelling inappropriate things, he always says, "Shame is a useless, weak emotion." Which makes me wonder if he was ever taught it or if his parents ever reinforced the idea of it. And the way he says it(very uppity) makes me feel like having shame is wrong and I never know what to say after he says it.

No, shame is a natural, chemical response to situations we (as individuals) cannot control. I'm guessing you've asked your friend why he does this, what's his usually answer or does it differ from time to time? He usually just says "Because I don't care what anybody thinks." Maybe its not shame but he doesn't seem to know how to act in public and always tries to put himself above everybody. Again, I don't think the ideas of shame and guilt were ever reinforced which would teach him some humility.

	If it's a genuine condition, it sounds more likely to be an impulse-control disorder than anything else. Not the same as a mood disorder. He feels the same emotions as everyone else, just lacks the inhibition to not express himself in socially-unacceptable situations. I think its just poor parenting, lack of discipline, and I think it gives him a feeling of superiority.
