To Know Your Fortune: Reasonable or Terrible?

If you were to go to a fortune teller and ask her to tell you your fortune, she would most likely be very vague, hard to understand, and often inaccurate. This is what makes getting your fortune told fun for some people. You can never really understand what the fortune teller says; it's all mysterious. Now it would be another matter if you could be told your real, completely accurate future clearly. I find it likely that a lot of people would not be as interested in this option, though some people may want to know... mainly those who like being prepared. Now, if it were you getting the option to have your fortune told clearly and completely accurately (all reasons why complete accuracy is not possible aside), would you accept it? Think hard. Do you really want to know what'll happen, say, tomorrow? What if you were told something dreadful, like, for example, the accurate fortune teller told you you would get run over by a bus next week. Would you rather know so that you can prepare, or would you wish you didn't know because you know you're just going to worry about it and not enjoy your last week of life? Then again, what if you were told something brilliant, like, for example, in the next week you would become famous and everybody would love you. Would you rather know so that you can look forward to it, or would you wish you didn't know so that it could be a true surprise? Would you really want to know your future as far ahead in time as you would like? Why exactly? Honest opinions, please.

I like detail.

Unless knowing your future can change it. You could know your future as it would have been without otherwise having the foresight, but now that you know, due to free will, it can be skewed. But that would make knowing it completely pointless to begin with.

This would be very awkward. If I was told my future, I'd try doing things to prevent the events happening... but if my future was set to exactly that, me trying to prevent that happening will end up in that happening, if that makes sense.

Very fascinating to think about, but it would be very scary! I don't want to plan too far ahead in life - take things slowly, being told the future would be too much and make my life seem shorter than it already is.

Though, interestingly, in the book "FlashForward", someone actually ended up meeting the person who was predicted to kill him, and engaged in combat.

But somehow survived despite being in the correct place to end up dead, AND actually being shot.

I would want to know only so I can change it to snub destiny, and relish in my free will.

I absolutely wouldn't want to know. I wouldn't want the weight of the future knowledge on my shoulders.

That's sort of what I was saying. I might take the opportunity if I had the option of choosing just one specific event in the future and seeing how it turns out (such as my college graduation, or where I will be living next year) or even right now I wouldn't mind knowing if I have gotten approved for a grant to pay for my classes. Small things that bug me like that.

But in general, no, I would decline having my fortune read.
