Honor Killing: Why hasn't anything been done?

It has been outlawed, the thing is it's an age old tradition that not all are willing to abandon. As you are aware, when men in India die, traditionally they are burned on a pyre. The woman traditionally is expected to throw herself upon the pyre.

It's illegal now, the only thing is, who are you really going to punish? You can't punish the woman, because she's dead. you can't punish the mourners, because it's not a crime to avoid preventing crime.

not much you can do really, apart from educate kids against it, and hope their generation grows up not doing it, therefore the tradition just dying out...

There's a lot you could do about it, but it would require a lot of political will, and a police force with excellent funding and training.

Is honor killing the same as sati? Really, sati sounds a bit worse to me, since I have learned that even if the women refuse to throw themselves into the flames, they get pushed into them. Also, even if they somehow survive, they become outcasts. Lose-lose situations suck.

I thought that was the vikings?
