	i think the point is that the covenant has their religion HIGHLY based upon finding and firing the halo rings. the rings were left behind by the forerunners who (just before having the flood be a major problem) pushed humanity back to the stone age. after being pushed to having their back to the wall by the flood. they realized that the humans were better suited to take the role of being the rulers of the galaxy and thus, left all their creations to acknowledge humans as "reclaimers". ok, this gets back to the line "i would have been your daddy...but the dog beat me over the fence." it might mean that realistically. the humans should have been the leaders of the covenant instead of the prophets. essentially being the "dad" in the covenant "family" but the prophets beat them to the position and therefore the covenant is lead by the prophets

	Its the Master Chief talking in his head to the control room he's saying that he would of been their first because he and cortana thought they were the 1st to use the Silent Cartographer but sum how the covent forces arrived ther earlier... they used this line cause SGT Johnson says it earlier in the game (HALO Combat Evo) but he says after firing on alien forces i would have been your daddy... but the dog beat me over the fence.
