Drivers!?! For speakers!?! Surely a burglar didn't invade your home and cut open your BA735 and take out the cones;). I don't think speakers need device drivers...perhaps your onboard sound or soundcard.

YOU DONT NEED DRIVERS FOR YOUR SPEAKERS!!!!! THERE IS NO SUCH THING!!!!! Sorry to shout that, but someone else already posted it. You will need new drivers for your sound card, and the speakers will work just fine.

I think that becvause these are speakers that use either a USB or some form of digital interface there is a chance that drivers are required
I couldn't see XP specific "profile" files but here's the link to gateway: http://www.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?strSearch=boston+acoustics&searchType=all ------------------- The further back you can look, the farther ahead you can see. <paraphrased> - Winston Churchill

Had the same problem as many of you. Was getting ready to toss the speakers out the window, however, managed to find a good rep at BA who led me to Gateway downloads. Talked to a great rep who showed me how to get the speakers working. Here's what the BA rep sent me. Start there and you'll be set. My speakers are now working cuz of a change I made to the sound card output. Hope this helps! Good luck! The problem you are having with XP and 2K is not the speakers fault. The speakers are like headphones and do not need software to run. They will work with anything that has a digital output. The problem lies with your sound cards ability to output a digital signal based on a conflict with 2k and XP(see notes from Microsoft below). I am sure your friends speakers are analog and not digital. This type of test does not tell us if your sound card is outputting the proper digital output. To resolve this issue, contact Gateway or SoundBlaster to obtain a Windows XP or 2kdriver that supports digital output on the dual-mode analog/digital capable sound card. If the both lights or illuminated on the BA735 and there is no sound it because there is no digital signal. This will resolve the problem you are having with your sound card not outputting digital if not please let me know. We will help as long as it takes to restore your sound. ________________________ Matthew Malone Boston Acoustics 300 Jubilee Dr. Peabody, MA 01960 P: 978-538-5000 F: 978-538-5100 Boston BA735 Digital Speakers Do Not Work After Windows XP Upgrade (Q302710) The information in this article applies to:
After you upgrade your Gateway Essential 866 computer with a Crystal sound card from Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Windows XP, your Boston Acoustic BA735 speakers may not work. However, analog speakers or headphones work when you connect them into the same jack that the BA735 speakers use. This issue may also occur on Gateway computers that use a Sound Blaster Live! sound card. CAUSE This issue can occur if you are using a driver that does not support digital output on the dual-mode analog/digital capable sound card for Windows XP. After you upgrade to Windows XP, the digital output on the shared digital/analog sound card is not enabled. The integrated sound card is set to analog output only mode, and there is no way to switch to digital output. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, contact Gateway to obtain a Windows XP or 2k driver that supports digital output on the dual-mode analog/digital capable sound card. To work around this issue, use analog speakers or headphones. STATUS This behavior is by design. MORE INFORMATION The digital output of the shared digital/analog port does not function in Digital mode in Windows XP, but the analog mode works. NOTE : Even with Windows Me, the BA735 speakers must be plugged in during a power-on cycle to function. For additional information about the Boston Acoustic speakers, please see the following Gateway Web site: http://www.gateway.com The third-party contact information included in this article is provided to help you find the technical support you need. Solution for BA735 (unwashed heathen

re: i need the drivers for the speakers |

If you guys have the BA735 (non USB) SPDIF-out(only) then plug into the SPDIF-in on your Digital supported card, and then in XP goto Volume Control and turn on ADVANCED CONTROLS. Under Play Control/Volume hit the Advanced button; you'll see a Digital Audio Output only box, check it and adjust the controls.. USB drivers are available at either Gateway's or Boston Accoustic's sites, 98/ME/2000 is the only thing that is supported for those USB drivers.

Just throw them away or give them to whoever you give obsolete hardware to. You could have earned enough money to buy compatible speakers in the it the ime it takes to learn that these only work with some soundcards with some versions of windows and there is no solution obvious from Gateway for XP. Or reinstall 98! There is a driver for that!

Frederick - you wrote "If you guys have the BA735 (non USB) SPDIF-out(only) then plug into the SPDIF-in on your Digital supported card, and then in XP goto Volume Control and turn on ADVANCED CONTROLS. I can see the advanced controls, but it is grayed out so not a viable selection. thanks for your thoughts
