Log in to remove this sponsored message It is a bright sunny day. i walk up a road to a field of flowers. i see a boy. hes just laying there, as if hes dead."hey. hey. hey! what are you doing?"a small girlish voice came out of my mouth. he looks at me. suddenly, i am at a farm, where the boy is all packed up. i feel sad, and a teardrop rolls down my cheek. he comes up to me and gives me a kiss on the cheek. he promises he'll come back to marry me. he turns and waves goodbye. then suddenly, I'm falling through a dark abyss full of all my fears and crushed hope! i'm falling faster and faster and faster... I jolted awake in a cold sweat. its that dream again... its been 18 years since i last saw him, and recently, Ive been having dreams about him. i remember, he did promise to come back and marry me, but he probably forgot. after all, we were just kids. But, these dreams... they're having a negative effect on my social and work life. not that i have much of a social life. i need to find a way to stop thinking about him... "Mary!" my mother called from downstairs."I'm going to the market place! wanna come?"i sighed. oh well. it'll keep my mind off him. for a bit anyways... i pushed up my glasses and got dressed and headed downstairs. on our way to the market place, mom ran into her friend Sasha, the market mans wife. whenever they hook up, they can go on for hours!(and they often do!) so i sat on the bench nearby, and waited for them to finish."did you hear?"Sasha said eagerly"Thomas told me this morning, a new boy moved into the farm!" my ears perked up. this was interesting."no, really?" my mother asked. "oh yes, apparently Joe left the farm to him(harvest goddess rest his soul!) i bet its that nice boy that visited us all those years ago!"Sasha gossiped. the rest i didn't really listen to. my mind was reeling with the possibilities. could it be him? could Mathew have come back? i was bouncing on the bench impatiently, waiting for those old blabbermouths to be finished. finally, after what seemed like an eternity they said goodbye and Sasha left."mother, can i go to the farm and meet the new boy?" i exclaimed excitedly. my mother gave me an odd look. i never talked about boys."not right now Mary. i have shopping to do and he probably has lots to do, recovering that old rat hole, and cant have you bothering him." i sighed and gloomily followed her into the store. Fate? that night i lay in my bed staring at the ceiling, just thinking. what was i going to say to him when i met him? does he even remember me?what if he doesn't like me? what if he falls in love with one of the prettier girls? all these what ifs screaming in my head! sleep was impossible now. i stayed like that all night, and naturally, i wasn't myself in the morning. it was Tuesday, so i headed to the library to start working. but because i was so tired, i was so absentminded! i was wondering where i had put something, and was completely lost in thought, when i accidentally bumped into someone."oh sorry! i wasn't..."i stopped dumbfounded. it was him. it was Mathew, my childhood friend. he looked so different, except for his eyes. his eyes were still that playful blue. i soon realized i was gaping. and i started blushing."no, I'm sorry, i didn't see you coming. I'm Mathew." he said regaining himself. i snapped back to focus. he didn't remember."I-I'm Mary. I-it was my fault. when i get lost in thought, i don't see anything around me. sorry again..."i stuttered. "can i help?" was his reply, my heart swooned."I'm writing a book. i was just wondering where one of inspiration novels had gone to. that's all. sorry again." i replied smiling a bit. "that's neat." "if you want anything to read, just talk to me and stop by." i said my smile even bigger. "you bet i will. bye Mary!" and he left. i sighed and my legs gave out. i crumpled on the floor. it was him. he's came back to me. A Small Apology i was light on my feet the rest of the day. i didn't think about anything but Mathew. my parents were a little worried, but i told them i was fine. i went to bed and had sweet dreams. no more nightmares for me! the next morning i was hoping he would come again. but he didn't. he didn't come the next day either. he didn't come all week. i was very upset, but i didn't let anyone else know about it. on Monday morning my father, basil, woke me up extra early. "morning Mary! ready to go out to mothers hill?" oh yeah! i forgot in all my excitement about Mathew. every Monday our family goes out to mothers hill and helps my dad in his research. i sluggishly got up and got dressed. i grabbed some toast and followed dad out. we were looking for a certain herb, when i heard a voice behind me."hi Mary." i jolted up and looked behind me. it was Mathew! he was smiling and i blushed and muttered a hi."what are you doing here in mothers hill this early?"he asked."every Monday my family goes out and helps my dad with his research. hes a botanist." i explained. "oh. do you want any help? i have some free time before i have to go back to the farm." i smiled and said he could help if he wanted to. after looking around for a few minutes, Mathew stopped and looked at me."Mary?I'm sorry i haven't gone to the library, but Ive been so busy! that farm was such a mess! i hope you're not mad..." i looked up at him shocked. he was sorry?"no, its OK. i understand. you were busy and that's a good thing. i wouldn't get mad at such a silly thing!" "really? do you think you could come to the farm once in awhile with some books? they might be really helpful." i grinned and said I'd love to. just then my dad came over. "hello. are you the new boy at the farm? Anna's told me lots about you."he said cheerfully. "really? i haven't even been here that long..." he said a little embarrassed. i new dad was about to say something else, but i cut him off. once he starts talking about plants (and me!), he never shuts up! "actually dad, Mathew needs to go back to the farm." both Mathew and my dad were a little surprised at me, but Mathew got my drift and hastily agreed"uhh, yeah! oh, Mary? don't forget to come with those books!"then he turned and with a wave and a smile, he left. Heartbreak we left mothers hill a little after Mathew left. i knew dad wanted to ask me a million questions about him, but i was too giddy to even bother to listen him. he asked me to go to his farm and bring him some books! i better start picking which ones right away! when we got home my mother made some tea. i was about to go to the library, when she asked where i was going."to the library." i answered impatiently. "did you forget? today's Monday! we got to go to the supermarket today, plus, the library is supposed to be closed today, so no one is going to come."she scolded. i scowled and then started sipping the tea. i grumbled all the way to the supermarket. when we went in i just sat down and waited for mother to be done. the door jingled and Mathew came in! twice in one day? this is one good day i thought. but if Mathew saw me, he didn't show it. instead, he went and bought some seeds, then got a gift wrapped. maybe that gift is for me? he then walked into the backroom. why was he going in there? i decided to follow him. i looked back at my mother. she was busily chatting to manna, the winemakers wife. that was good. i could be gone for hours and she would never notice. so i sneaked into the backroom and hid behind a bookshelf. i could hear voices. "hi Mathew, what are you doing here today?" that was the sweet clear voice of Karen, the prettiest girl in mineral town! that was not a good thing... "no real reason. i just wanted to give you this. i looked all over for it." Mathew answered. the gift he must have given her must have been wonderful and special, because Karen said with obvious delight"oh Mathew!this is wonderful!how did you..."i didn't catch the rest of it, i was already running out of my hiding spot and out the door, holding back tears. i told my mother i wasn't feeling well and headed back home. when i got there, i pounded up the stairs and locked my door. i then fell onto my bed and wept bitterly. my heart felt like it was torn in half, ripped up in shreds and fed to a blazing fire. Gifts i stayed like that all day, until i finally cried myself to sleep. i woke up in the middle of the night, feeling slightly, just slightly, better. i needed some air to think. i crept out of the house and went over to the mountain top to think. i had brought my favorite book to read while i was up there. i usually feel better when i read. it was a lot closer to dawn then i thought, and soon the rays of the sun were peeking out of the clouds, making a beautiful sunrise. i was reading, when i suddenly burst into tears again. i heard a concerned voice behind me."Mary? whats wrong, why are you crying?" it was Mathew again. great, just who i didn't want to see. i didn't want to tell him the real reason why i was crying, so i said "oh, i-i was just reading a really sad part in my book. Th-that's all..." he looked relieved. he sat down beside me and we both just stared at the morning dawn. "...Mary?" "yes, Mathew?" "I'm sorry. i know you heard me and Karen in the store." "..." "we saw you running and Karen felt so terrible that she made you cry. she chewed my head off you know." "so that's why your here? because you darling Karen told you to?!" i said angrily. "no! i didn't know you were gonna be here! i came up here to think about why you were so upset! besides, Karen isn't my sweetheart."She wasn't?"she recently lost her charm bracelet she had gotten from rick when they were kids. i found it and brought it to her." i ignored that and asked"then what was that present you wrapped?" "that's was for you. when you came to drop off some books, i was going to give it to you as thanks, but you never came." i felt as if all my worries were nothing just because he said that."here. you might as well have it now." and he handed me a wrapped gift. i opened it slowly, and when i looked inside, i gasped! it was a bracelet! it had the words 'Mary and Mathew - friends forever' inscribed in it. i was on the verge of tears again."thank you..." i whispered. i was touched. he smiled and passed me a handkerchief. i looked up gratefully at him and gazed at his eyes for a moment, the endless sea of blue that could easily drown me. i tore my eyes away and then asked as innocently as i could "hey Mathew? do you ever cry when you read sad books?" he had to think about that for a few moments, but he answered"sometimes i do. depends on the book." i smiled and stood up. i picked up my book and handed it to him."here. I've already read it. think of it as thanks for making me feel better, and having the guts to apologize to me." he looked up at me with an odd expression on his face. then he smiled and stood up to, and took the book and said"thanks. I'll start off with this." His Farm we walked back to his farm together. when we got there he offered to show me around. i thought that sounded nice, so i followed him around. he showed me his chicken coup, his barn, and his stable. one of his cows recently had a calf, and he let me feed it. it was so cute! it even licked my hand. Mathew let me name her. i chose the name cream. Mathew thought that was a good name. then we walked to the stable. his horse was very big and a lovely brown color. its name suited it very well. its name was hazel. Mathew offered to give me riding lessons. i thought that was a great idea. i cant wait! at the chicken coup, Mathew started feeding the chickens. boy, i never knew that such small, cute creatures could make such a ruckus! when he was done, we went and looked at his crops. they were only sprouts since it was early in the season but Mathew promised to bring me some veggies when they were done growing. the trip was wonderful! i never wanted it to end. but, like all good things, it did. Mathew walked me back home. we held hands the entire walk. i don't think he noticed though, but that's all right. when we got to the door we stopped and just gazed into each others eyes. he broke the silence first."well, I'm pretty sure this is your house." i grinned slightly and gave him a soft goodbye. when i got in the house, i was bombarded by questions."where were you?""are you OK?""what happened""why didn't you leave a note?" i just gave them a funny look, and walked up the stairs and locked my door. Questions after that, things were going great between us. whenever he had some spare time, he would come to the library, and i would help him find some books. sometimes, he would even bring me gifts, like flowers or chocolate. some Mondays he would come with us to mothers hill and help me and my dad with his research. he even kept his promise about riding lessons. after me and my mom go out to the supermarket, i go to his farm and he teaches me how to ride. i wish our time together would never end. about a month passed, and we were having a great time together. me and Karen became good friends again too. my mom was shopping and talking to Sasha at the same time, and me and Karen were in the backroom. she had some chores that needed to be done and i offered to help. while we were sweeping, Karen asked about me and Mathew. "hey Mary, how have you and Mathew been getting along?" she asked with a wink."Wh-what do you mean?" i said blushing slightly."come on, don't tell me you haven't noticed!" "n-notice what?" Karen gave an exasperated sigh. "you and Mathew? you guys have spent a lot of time together lately." "yeah? so?" i said, avoiding her gaze"is it him?" that one caught me by surprise. "what do you mean, 'is it him'?" "is it the same boy who had visited here so long ago. i know you've been dreaming that he would come back, and I'm not exactly stupid when it comes to love matters you know." that was true."well, yes, i guess so. but he doesn't remember our relationship at all." "i didn't think so, or else you guys would have been dating already. do you truly love him?" i blushed and stammered"i-i-i don't know..." she looked at me and then she decided to drop the subject. we continued cleaning in silence. but she did get me thinking. maybe i should try to move our relationship up to the next level. as if she could read my thoughts Karen suddenly exclaimed"i know!" "know what?" i asked confused."at the fireworks festival, if he asks you to watch with him, you'll know you guys can take the next step!" she did have a point. we began talking about it excitedly, when Sasha came in. "Mary, time for you to go. thank you for helping Karen clean up. oh, and Karen, Ann's here. she wants to know if she can come in and help you cook supper." Ann is the innkeepers daughter. shes really nice and a very good cook. she just might save Sasha and Jeff from very bad indigestion.(Karen's can't cook to save her life!) i smiled and said goodbye to Karen and left. i went to Mathews farm with some new thoughts in my head. maybe, just maybe, me and Mathew could be more than friends. i thought, looking at the bracelet Mathew gave me. i haven't taken it off ever since he gave it to me. The Blacksmiths Shop when i got to the farm, i saw Mathew struggling with a stubborn stump. his axe just wouldn't cut it. he spotted me."oh, hi Mary!" he put his axe down and sat down panting."sorry, but i can't give you any lessons today."he said, looking at the stump. "maybe i can help?" i offered. he smiled. "thanks Mary. can you go down to Saibara's place and ask him to upgrade my axe?"(saibara is the towns blacksmith) "sure!" Mathew looked at me gratefully and went into his house. he came out with some silver ore and a money bag."here, this should cover the cost."he said, handing me the bag and the ore. i smiled at him and left for saibaras just as Mathew started weeding. when i went in to the blacksmith i asked saibara to upgrade the axe. he took the money and the ore and headed into his workshop. after a few minutes i heard a shout! "ouch!" me, being the cautious, caring type, rushed into the workshop and saw gray, the blacksmiths grandson. his hand was red and bleeding. saibara rushed over "see? this is what happens when you're not paying attention!!" he bellowed. then he noticed me and quickly changed his attitude and asked if gray was OK. gray saw me also and quickly pretended nothing was wrong. "I-I'm fine. its just a cut." i wouldn't have any of it. i went up to gray and took out my handkerchief. before he could protest, i wrapped up his hand to stop the bleeding. "there. that wasn't so bad now, was it? you should get it checked out and properly bandaged by the doctor. it looks pretty serious." i told him. he looked at me with a surprised expression. his cheeks were also a little red. "Th-thanks..." i smiled at him and then looked at saibara. "when the axe is done, please deliver it to Mathews farm." i waved goodbye and left. when i got back to the farm, i decided to help Mathew water his crops. they were almost ripe. i didn't mention what happened at the blacksmiths shop. i didn't think it was very important. when we were done, he apologized for asking me to deliver his axe for him. i just told him not to worry about it, and waved goodbye. Sick!? The fireworks festival is almost here! Tomorrow, we all go to the beach to watch the fireworks. after i was done at the library, i went to Mathews farm to remind him. when i got there, i saw his cows, sheep and chickens out in the pasture. the crops hadn't been watered. Mathew was nowhere in sight. where is he? i went and knocked on Mathews door. i heard a cough and a small"come in..." i walked inside and saw Mathew in bed. he looked pale and he was coughing and sneezing."Mathew! are you OK?!" i asked alarmed. he smiled weakly."just a cold...-cough-cough!-" "you know better than that! I'll be back with the doctor." i scolded. "n-no!-cough- i-I'm alright! ahchoo!" he protested. i put my hand on his forehead. he was burning up!"lay down. you should save your strength! don't move. I'll-be-right-back." he sighed and laid down. i quickly left for the doctor. when i came back, the doctor and Elli were trailing behind me. i left doctor and Elli to their work, and made Mathew some hot milk. when i came back, doctor had left and Elli gave me some instructions. "give him some of this to sooth his throat and calm down his coughing. make sure he stays in bed and he gets warm sop and cool fruit drinks. maybe you could brew up some herbal teas that might help. most important, make sure he doesn't get out of bed. apparently, he thought it was a great idea to clear some of his field out in the rain yesterday." Elli gave him a glare. i smiled and told Elli he would be fine with me taking care of him. she smiled back and knew i would. once Elli left, Mathew started getting up. "and what pray tell are you doing?!" "i need to-cough cough- water my crops." he said weakly. "oh no you don't!" i forced him back in bed, (which wasn't hard to do) and gave him some of the medicine Elli gave me. he nearly spat it back out. i forced the rest down and had him drink the hot milk. he sighed and lay down. "thanks Mary." he said, just before drifting into a restful sleep. i sighed and sat at the table to rest and think. great! Mathews too sick to go to the fireworks tomorrow! i can't go with one of the girls, because they already have dates! well, maybe... nah, saibara probably won't let gray come. but i guess if he did, i could watch with him. i sighed and went outside and started watering Mathews crops. Confused its the firework's festival today! Mathews still too sick to go so...i guess I'll watch with gray. i looked into the mirror and sighed. i just have no talent when it comes to prettying myself up. there was a knock on my door."come in." my mother opened the door and sighed when she saw me. without saying anything, she sat down and started fixing my make up and clothes. when she was finally done i opened my eyes and as always, was surprised at the way i looked. i actually looked pretty! "there. now you better hurry if you don't want to miss the fireworks." i thanked her and left. when i got there, almost everyone was there with either a date or a husband. i sighed and sat down at my favorite spot. i heard something scuffle behind me and i looked and saw gray. "uhmmm... h-hi Mary." he stuttered."oh, hi gray. saibara let you come?" "y-yeah. he made parts of the fireworks and wants me to study them... how i can do that I'll never know!" i giggled and looked at him expectantly. "so, um... d-do you have anyone to w-watch the fireworks w-with?" he said with great difficulty. i smiled, flattered he liked me enough to be embarrassed to ask me. "no, do you want to watch with me?" he looked shocked but quickly sat down too and nodded shyly. the fireworks started soon and i was entranced with them again. i absent mindedly said "with all this noise and action, i wonder what the fish think is going on." he looked at me with amazement, as if i just spoke a miracle. "y-yeah, i always wondered that too." i looked at him and noticed some things i hadn't noticed before. he normally wore a tan work suit, and a blue baseball cap. today he was wearing some baggy blue jeans and a loose grey sweater. he was still wearing the cap though. i never noticed the intensity of his grey eyes before though. for a second i caught his gaze and was as lost in them as i was in mathews... he saw me looking at hm and quickly turned away blushing. but, i was left with feeling i had never felt before, except when i was with mathew. i was a little worried too. i didn't want to fall in love with anyone other than mathew. i hope this doesn't lead to anything... then the last rocket exploded in a brighht green across the sky. me and gray looked at each other and left. it was as if we talked without even saying anything. i wonder it the meeting left him as confused as i was... thanks to everyone who is reading this, please feel free to offer ideas, tips, maybe something you've caught that you thought didn't make sense, or sounded terrible, please post. i want to make this into a novel maybe, so your help is neede and appresiated. i hope you've enjoyed this so far. once i'm done this, im free for requests. like say, you want a story like this about a different girl, or a girl you made up. but i won't take any requests untill this is finished. please post and tell me what you think. it really does mean so much to me!
