It also means you can use the Quick Reply feature with smilies disabled, which I'd appreciate.

And because of the quick quote feature I would say this is only fair.

Like I said before, I don't mean this to disable smilies as a whole. Just in your own posts.
The same function as the 'Disable Smilies in this post' checkbox has after each post. Just on a permanent basis.

Well it's one of the very few things that are missing from the preferences section of your profile. Stuff can be easily disabled like signatures in posts. I do like the smilies as :D or :P. I just don't like the Neo smilies and turning them off should be, as I see it, something that's as easy to turn off permanently as signatures.

Personally, I feel that an emoticon clutters up the message, creating random spaces between lines, etc.

So with this suggestion, the Disable Smilies tab would be checked by default? That way if you wanted to include smilies in a post, you could always uncheck it just for that post.

Not a big thing, but useful, nonetheless.

I'm gonna bump this and say I support.
One of the main reasons I do is when I write something like:
1eople
2:Cats
3riginal

1 and 3 become smilies.
