As horrifying as the presence/idea of notification bombs for the purpose of annoying people is, it's not something that happens constantly or frequent enough for me to think of it as a huge problem.

There was that point a while ago where people were doing it for the lulz but then we got them to stop, didn't we?

I think there are still a great many uses/positives for the ability to notify hordes of people, as opposed to the negatives. There ARE legitimate ways in which this feature could (and have) been used.

The notification system is such a handy feature. I've loved it since it was installed. It's so useful in knowing when someone responded to your post in a thread, since I would often forget about threads while waiting for someone to reply, and sometimes I would have to refresh the page over and over to see if someone responded, while with the notification system it's much easier to know when someone responded to your post. Now obviously, not all people are going to put notifications in a post when talking to someone, but it's still a useful feature for that.

As for notif bombs, they have a ton of good uses. As a leader of a Pokemon clan, I know that they're great for notifying the members of that clan of an upcoming event, or that they've been inactive, or anything like that. Same thing goes for some game threads like the Sketching game in PokeLounge, once a new round or judging from the previous round is up, there's a handy little notif bomb for all the people that signed up to be on the notif bomb, so they could know when stuff was happening in the game. And in general for forums (like specific game or clan forums or anything), notif bombs for the members who've favorited that forum are really good for informing the members of that forum of upcoming events and whatnot. Even in the forums like The Lobby where I remember someone had a huge notif bomb for everyone who favorited the forum for the announcement of some event, those are good too! If you don't like being on a certain list, unfavorite the forum or ask to be taken off the notif list; that's pretty simple.

As far as the notif bombs for simple annoyance go, those aren't allowed anyway; and once again, that's the person's fault, not the system. Those shouldn't be happening anyway, so I wouldn't get too annoyed about that.

I do like that idea about being able to maybe delete notifications once you get them. o: That could be good for keeping important notifs up there when you need them. Or maybe even a mark as unread" option for notifs too.

That's a reason against your suggestion though, they garner attention/discussion, and the likelyhood of someone abusing the notification system is small.

It's also not something advertisers would know about, or else it would've happened by now, maybe not on such a scale as ctrl's nuke, but have we even had an instance of advertisers/bots using the notifications system?

Sure, but I'm sure a huge % of the people I listed won't care and others would even want an option to filter out pointless notification bombs altogether.Is the solution to this, as Chaos Team suggested, to unfavorite every single forum and put your profile privacy on "always appear offline?" That's a silly suggestion and most certainly goes against the very point of favoriting forums at all.

As Dynamite said, it was intended to be a mandatory feature. That's all fine and dandy, when you want to mention someone, they should be notified or when you quote them. But in forums you haven't posted in at all or in quite some time should set off an automatic option of some sort that filters out any notifications from within that forum unless from a neofriend. This way, inactive accounts don't get notified, spambots/people using these bombs can only affect the active people in a particular forum, and those that have stated some benefits for actual good uses can still benefit along with friends being able to give other friends heads up on stuff they're probably interested in. Everybody wins.
