	Log in to remove this advertisement Right now, all threads are manually closed, even those that hit 30 pages. So should there be a feature implemented into all threads existent that will close them automatically when they hit 30 pages, particularly in forums without mods, as threads in those forums often overstep 30? 	30 pages isn't an actual rule, so no support, there is no real issue with overstepping 30 pages, it's up to the moderators discretion to deem whether to close.

	Like whelan said, the 30 page limit is not set in stone. In the Football and Roleplaying forums, threads exceed 50 pages, the Roleplaying forum has had threads with over 100 pages. 30 pages is what is recommended, some get closed a little early and some get closed a little late, it's not something to worry about. If you see a thread go beyond 30 pages in an un-moderated forum do your bit and tell the section/catmod about it. -------------------

	I see what you mean, castlewars, but the 30 page "limit" is more of a guideline than anything else. We do generally try to not let threads go over 30 pages, because it looks a bit messy on the index. There are cases where it's desirable to have a thread go beyond this though, and I don't see many 30+ page threads that should be closed but aren't. So, I'm not really sure if there's any issue with how things currently operate. If you see a thread in an unmoderated forum that's beyond 30 pages, I'm sure that no one minds you letting the section or category moderator know.

It has nothing to do with the database or anything other than it makes the threads in the forums seem uniform, instead of just keeping a thread going and going and going. Also with threads that have a lot of pages usually are hard to navigate through when you are trying to find something particular. Though there have been many improvements on searching through entire threads for content with the search engine. -------------------

	There is no need for a 30 page boundary. Sometimes threads within the site go over 30 pages and I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't go to far. 	Actually the 30 page concept should be dropped altogether. It's a really old guideline that we no longer recommend. I think mods (myself included) close it on the 30 page mark more for "traditional" purposes more than anything these days. 	I'm not going to close a thread down to suit my own resolution, I'm going to do whatever fits as many people as possible. Thirty-pages is a nice, well-established page "limit," so I might as well just go with that. It does the job, which, in my case, is to keep the forum index tidy. It's also nice to split up long-running threads into separate "volumes." If there was a thread advancing fast enough such that branching off at thirty pages was becoming a nuisance, then I'd do something different. I've never had that problem, though.
