I really want to play the game but when I turn the game on I get to the press start screen at the beginning and i press start and cant get any farther I checked the controller i am using and the start button works so I cant figure it out and i know it isnt frozen because the press start words fade and get dark and music plays.

So the game is brand new, right? When you press start at the start screen it's supposed to go to a screen with a rectangular box and Anna's picture to the left of it. Then you choose whether you want a new game, load game, etc. You say the screen just turns black with music playing? That's odd. What does the music sound like? Is it regular music, or does it sound like it's stuck on repeat? The only thing I can suggest is that maybe your Playstation 2 is getting too old to run the game. That's what happened to my first three Playstation 2's. I played them so much for so long that they kept breaking down and not wanting to read my games.

Excuse me for asking, but do you have a newer version of the PS2? If so, you have to hold down the off button for at least two seconds. Otherwise, it reboots itself. From time to time, I forget about it when I'm in a hurry, and have the same problem, no matter what game I'm playing.
