Is there anyway to decrease the difficulty of the computer? I'm having trouble beating the computer with a early zergling rush, which doesn't normally happen on multi-player with my friends.

No, the computer is just the way it is. When you get a little better, you will be complaining that the comp is too easy. I know it does occasionally go 4pool, but other than that it's quite slow.
