My son and I love HL.
We play stuff like Unreal T. and Max payne, Hitman, etc
What is the closest thing to Half life out there available, old or new stuff??

Have heard of doom obviously but never tried it.
SOunds like I need to look at some of the old standby games like doom and Halo, good info.
Also all I have heard about the Crysis is that its a problem for lots of computers and is very hardware intensive. mike

Most say F.E.A.R is one of the scariest games ever made. I had a blast playing it. It doesn't take a lot to run and make it look beautiful. Most mid-range computers should be able to run it at least on medium. System Requirements Lab is a good place to check if you can run a game or not. You should drop by the F.E.A.R forum as well!

If you have a newer PC you might be able to run Bioshock. It's a good game although it is fairly different from Half-Life.

Bioshock would be a good place to start, failing that, Counter Strike and Doom 3

My son and I think HL was one the best games every created.
When you consider how old it is, its was way ahead of its time. We love the format and everything about it.
But we also like stuff like Unreal T.
So it might be nice if we rated these games that have been talked about in terms of: on a 1 to 10, which game is the most like HL and one a scale of 1 to 10, how good is the game in general, including everything to be considered.
So the games are:

Doom 3
Bioshock
Counterstrike
FEAR
Halo
Crysis

Of those games I've only played Bioshock and Halo. Bioshock is an excellent game having one of the best storylines and gameplay of any shooter out now. You get the sense that "there's something wrong with this place" and suspense that you feel in Half-Life but apart from that much that is similar between the two games. (10/10 gameplay) (4/10 similarity)

Halo has very similar enemies to Half Life (flood and zombies are similar to the head crabs and zombies in Half Life). There is some suspense but there generally isn't as much as there is in Half Life. There also isn't as much weapon variety as there is in Half Life. However I don't consider Halo to be nearly as good as Half Life. It's a good game, just not as good as Half Life. (7/10 gameplay 6/10 similarity)

Of course if you haven't played Oppossing Force or BlueShift then you should play those games since they are parts of the Half Life story.
