To run The Bard's Tale on Win 7 do this:
1) Copy contents of DVD D:\Program files\inXile\ to a local drive eg: C:\Games\inXile
2) Right click on C:\Games\inXile\The Bard's Tale\The Bard's Tale.exe
Properties > Compatabiliy > WinXP SP2 > Ok
3) Right click on The Bard's Tale.exe and Run as Administrator
Worked for me.

This worked also for me. Its not neccessary to use the installer. It seems the problem arises only for the installer, which needs the Windows Media Player 9.

I tried the above steps but I am still getting a pop-up stating that I don't have "Windows Media Format Series 9 or Higher installed" and I'm being referred back to the disk, which also doesn't work. Sorry if I got something wrong here. The old series allowed me to do it this way, but it won't play any of the old versions either because of the bit level. Any help greatly appreciated.

I understand this thread is old, but it is the first thing that comes up when you search for Bard's Tale on Windows 7. What has been said above I am told works for the DVD version, but I haven't found anything online that works for the CD version on windows 7, so I thought I'd put the information out there to anyone that needs it.
1. Right click the disk in "my computer" and click open. You should see a Disk1.cab or something like that. All 6 disks have them. Go online and download a .cab extractor, and put the files in Program Files(x86)/inXile/The Bard's Tale or wherever you want to put the program files. Do for all 6 disks.
Alternatively, you can install it on an xp computer and copy the files. Either way works.
2. If you run the program in compatibility for XP service pack 2, it should actually run, but it will not have sound. To get sound, go to disk 6, and there should be a 'Sounds' folder that is not in a cabinet file, just straight up on the disk, with some .vwb files and an executable called WBCWin.exe. Copy the contents of that folder into the 'Sounds' folder in your program files.
3. Go to start->program files->accessories->command prompt(or cmd) and right click on the application to run as administrator. If you do not run it as administrator it may not work.
4. Use the command line to navigate to your sounds folder. If you don't know how, enter something like 'cd ..\..\Program Files (x86)\inXile\The Bard's Tale\Res\Sounds' at the prompt, but with whatever path names you used.
5. Run WBCWin.exe by entering 'WBCWin.exe *.vwb .\' in the command prompt, and wait for the .vwb files to extract
6. Sound should work, along with everything else. Hope this helps.

I've done everything listed here, however When I play the game I've got sound but only on the opening portions of the game, The game seems to not have sound functions once I get to the 1st chapter talking with the bar's wrench and the Drunken Patrons of the Bar. I'm still wondering if I've missed anything. And just to add one more thing, Disc 5 and Disc 6 both have sound files. Just wondering if that has anything to do with it, but 6 overrides 5 since they are the same file type. Any help would be much appreciative.

Right click on Setup.exe and choose Troubleshoot compatibility. Then choose Try recommented settings and Start program. The game is installed and does not require media player 9 etc.

None of this worked for me, there's a window that pops up in the taskbar, but it immediately disappears. Any ideas?
