Ultima Underworld The Stygain Abyss

When I try to use this game I keep getting a insufficiant EMS message. I don't know if it just won't work with WINDOWS XP or if there is something I can fix. If someone reads this and they know how to fix the problem please respond.

I downloaded the program, but unfortunatly it requires the game to be installed on the computer to work- unfortunate because I can't even install it.

re: Ultima Underworld The Stygain Abyss

If you want to get the game running on a modern PC, there's a program called DOSBox: its a free download, just search for it. It emulates a dos setting in windows, and you can change the settings in the .conf file, including the allocated memory (XMS, EMS, etc.), screen size, graphics support, loads of other things. There's support in the form of a help file and the website has documentation too, if I remember correctly.

You should also be able to install the game from within dosbox as well, as long as you mount the directory containing the installer: just change to the directory with the installer, and type "install <the directory containing the installer> <wherever you want the game installing>", so for instance "install c:\downloads c:\". It should make a subdirectory called "uw", or something similar.

Installing the game isn't that much of a requirement, if you've got the game all unpacked: it IS a DOS game, after all, it doesn't make registry entries etc., so you can move the files around if you don't want it in a particular folder.

Hope my tips are useful, and that you enjoy the game, it brings back memories...
