Should I take BMI in to consideration?

I've been losing a lot of weight this year. When I started, I was 280lbs. Now I'm 243lbs. I'm very proud of what I have done. My goal was to get to 220lbs. Maybe 210lbs. So I calculated my BMI with an online calculator. I'm 6'1, 24 years old, and with my current weight, I am technically "obese". But that isn't what is shocking me.

What shocks me is this: in order to be in the "normal weight" category, I would have to be at 185lbs. 185lbs! That is insane. I feel like I'd be a damn skeleton!

Judging from what I am now, losing 60 more pounds would be insane! I dunno if there would be anything left of me.

My brother says i should go by body fat % and forget about BMi.


Thoughts?

First of all, well done on your hard work and progress. You have an excellent frame for being strong and muscular, broad shoulders and hips, thick joints and even weight distribution. I think you could be a very lean (6 pack and everything) 195-215lbs if you keep eating right, lifting weights, getting stronger and stick with it.

BMI only works on large groups of people, like 100+ where all the outliers cancel each other out, so the skinny people with very small bones who are actually fat are cancelled out by the heavy people with big bones who are actually lean. So BMI correlates very well with body fat % in large groups, but it's not good for individuals.

A good measure beside photos is waist circumference, getting under 36 inches is always important for health and aesthetics, and even arnold at 235lbs, 6'1 and shredded had a 32 inch waist, whereas there are 5'9 guys who weigh 165lbs with a beer gut and 38 inch waist, so it quickly differentiates between being heavy from muscle and from fat.

BMI is a joke, and only works at best as a good rule of thumb. Even then, it's not a very good rule of thumb. Body fat percentage, waist size, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and these other such medical things serve as far better indicators of overall health.

Is the HCG plan where you eat only 500 calories per day and get a hormone from pregnant womens urine? I would strongly advise against that, especially the lack of exercise. You need to work hard in the gym, nourish your body will good food if you want a lean and muscular food. If you just want to be skinny like a marathon runner then of course not eating will work, but it's not a sustainable lifestyle.

For waist measurement just get a tape measure and measure around belly-button height with your stomach completely relaxed. Or if you only have a foot long ruler or something, use a piece of string to measure it, then find out how long the string is, 28 inches is scary small waist, even for someone who is say 135-155lbs, so I doubt your waist is that small.

So why are you on it now? Maintaining large amounts of weight loss is a part time job for the rest of your life if you're naturally endomorphic, so begin practicing it now by living the lifestyle you want to live the rest of your life. If you don't develop the ability to eat in social situations, plan meals, prepare food, eat when traveling etc, how will you do it when you're lean?

Yes, starvation and near starvation is often profoundly hunger blunting to most people's surprise, which is how anorexics can survive on an apple and can of tuna a day, the stomach also adapts and shrinks as you eat less so you get satisfied more easily (unfortunately the process works in reverse too).

What were you eating and drinking in a standard day before when trying to diet and failing?

If that was an average day and you weren't able to lose weight from that I can only assume that the portions were large as *bleep*.

500 calories a day is insane though and I realise it's your body and all that but I'd really advise against anything so drastic.

reminds me a lot of lyle mcdonald's rapid fat loss plan, except the program requires you to exercise twice a week. there's no urine required either lol.

protein bars actually have high carbohydrates, i think. might want to lay it off a little bit if you're trying to do low carb.
