[Story] Bilfys Weight Loss

Hello!

Ok here it goes, I've always been alittle bit on the heavy side and weight always bothered me. I have had many attempts in losing weight, jogging around the lake, going to the gym, eating healthy.. but of course I got lazy. No shock it happends to 99.9% of us.

In those attempts I did lose alittle weight at a time. Years ago I used to drink soda like 3 times a day, I used to eat hot pockets alot, I just didnt eat healthy or consider moderation. As time went on I ate alittle healthier I stopped soda and hot pockets completely... then I needed something to fill that void, eh how about ice cream? or how about chips and salsa? One substitute after another. I would spend probably total of 10 weeks a year at the gym.. when I got the job I have now I did alot of labor and activity, my job before was office work, on the computer all day sitting down pretending to do work editing my myspace.

After those years I somehow ended up losing about 20 lbs. Around 2 years ago I went for my physical and I weighed in at 228. I walked around the lake with my girlfriend, did some exercises and a year an a half later I decided to do something that was probably one of the best ideas Ive had.. (thats not saying much)

September 2008 I decided to try to challenge myself, I like to do this and I think everyone should do it every now and then. This idea was semi-inspired by professional wrestling legend Walter "Killer" Kowalski who has passed away a week before my decision. I found out that Kowalski was a vegetarian, I was shocked because a big guy like him, lifting weights alot meat is a big part of it because of protein but his reason was because he didnt want to poison himself with possible diseases from animals and just wanted to live the veggie life. quick quote from wikipedia..

He became a vegetarian in the late 1960s and claimed to be the only one in professional wrestling. He would not drink milk or alcohol, and he did not smoke. He would not even drive with wrestlers who smoked, which limited his traveling options. He was a popular speaker in the local Boston Vegetarian Society and Boston area vegetarian

So somewhere in my mind this idea came about, since Kowalski has done so much for professional wrestling, put his body on the line, trained some of the best wrestlers today, I am going to become a vegetarian for a month. Not only did I give up meat but I decided to cut down on pasta almost completely, I dont have pasta much and also no fried food and no junk food (both I dont eat anyway) Why?

1) To Challenge Myself.
2) A Cleansing.
3) Adventure into healthy alternatives.
4) Tribute to Killer Kowalski.

So I had to pick a month to do this and prepare and to let EVERYONE know so my family doesnt make me hamburgs for dinner or force feed me like they tend to do. Also if I let everyone know then I feel like I'll have to do it because everyone is expecting it.. alittle pressure but I didnt feel it. I decided with the holiday season arriving, lets wait till after so how about the good ol new years resolution gimmick! We were counting down the days, I was over a friends house for the new years eve party, eating a yummy meat filled dip all night.. until.. 5...4...3...2...1... HAPPY NEW YEAR!...

January 1st 2009 I wake up with a belly ache from drinking and eating ( i drink maybe twice a year and I dont smoke) and my month began! I bought lots of veggies and healthy foods and stored them for the days at work. A week later realized it really isnt a big deal, then I went out to eat and went to a nice resteraunt and I could only choose three things on that menu... made me realize how it must suck to be a vegetarian and understand that places should have more options for the veggie people.

Here Wii Go! I got the Wii Fit, played it alot, did tennis, hoola hoops whatever I had for games I did just about everyday realized I was losing weight... FAST FORWARD.

Feburary 1st 2009. I completed my month with no problem! Me and my parents went to Jimmys Steer (or Steak) House to celebrate, I got the steak tips with veggies and was happy.... until I ate my 3rd steak tip..... instant stomach pains. OMG was I in pain. Turns out if you go a while without meat then have meat, youre body rejects it! That wasnt fun.

In December I weighed in at 218 somehow...then in mid feburary I weighed 198... and now I weigh 190. I consider me weighing 190 success, havent tried to lose weight I just wanted to stay still.

After all of this I can say it changed my life alittle bit. I dont eat junk food...I will have a couple chips if Im at a party but I just leave it at that. I dont eat fried foods AT ALL. I never really liked candy like the normal person so I never have candy. I might not be the most educated on nutrition but I have an idea. I play it day by day.

This past October I wanted to challenge myself again so in October I gave up Dunkin Donuts mostly because it costs me $7.68 every morning, damn my bacon egg and cheese on an english muffin followed by a large coffee coolatte w/ skim milk! I was addicted so I had to break the addiction!

Well thats it, I was never really a good writer, my personality is just thrown into text and I really dont have a set up for my writing. Well I am currently finishing my physical therapy (for my back) nothing big but Im going to be doing home exersizes to increase strength and I think next januarary... I am going to sign up for the gym and give myself another goal!

Check this out!

Well done Bilfy, picture isn't working for me, but I think my internet connection is just a bit suspect at the moment. Congratulations on your dedication and success!

Great job mate, that's impressive. Now what kind of strength training are you doing/plan on doing?

re: [Story] Bilfys Weight Loss

Well my physical therapist said to not do any lifting that requires my arms going above my head, only because working on my back is the main goal and for some reason I need to avoid machines that make my body do that. I have to focus on my lower back where the key muscles are.

The standing exersizes where you pull the bar down, or doing the golf stroke (not sure what they are called exactly but thats what he calls them) and things of that nature. Also he told me to avoid treadmils and that olypticles and bikes were the best for the back.

I also need to do alot of leg strength training for all areas of my legs because that too is very important to my spine.

I plan on doing alittle more research to get a couple different routines going so Im not doing the same thing everyday at the gym so I dont end up hurting myself.

Wow, what a huge improvement. That's awesome, all just from relatively simple changes too! You're looking great!

re: [Story] Bilfys Weight Loss

Nice story. It almost inspired me to lose weight, but then I'd become anorexic

I gotta gain weight somehow, we could trade if you want, just a little bit though

re: [Story] Bilfys Weight Loss

It would be too expensive to do that :\

I think gaining weight would be better, I mean in a healthy type of way and not eating chips and french friends all day, nice big steak meals, mashed potatos, veggies.. mmmmmmmMMmm

re: [Story] Bilfys Weight Loss

Wow, awesome work, BILFY! Amazing results!

The only time I lost a ton of weight at once was when I was on a liquid diet, which was horrible. GexTheLizard tried it out of sympathy, which was awesome of her. It's very tough but you do lose a lot of weight, especially if you weren't prepared to cook entirely in liquid form.

Plus, I avoided pop, which is my main form of large caloric intake...
