Name this old (nes, snes, geneis etc) video game?

Name this old (nes, snes, geneis etc) video game?
I've been looking for this game since forever.
I don't really remember which console it belongs to, I just know that it's something like NES if not NES itself.

Also, I can only remember the very beginning of the game.

This is what I remember: You're a samurai holding a sword.
You're in a forest or a glade or something of that nature.
If you go forward a bit, (or right, since the game is 2D) you encounter a villager.
If you kill him, you fail the game and have to start over. (I think that this is the case, but for some reason I recall having to start over often, but not always. I could be mistaken though)

Anyway, that's all I can remember unfortunately.
