This is a gameshark cheat called "Loads of hits" It automatically gets 999 hits for every level during gameplay, however when it shows up in the ranking screen, it goes back to 511 hits for every level except for one...which happens to be 487 hits

He didn't cheat, he just killed off Falco after he went through the waterfall. Why? Because Falco takes away some kills in Sector Y that can mess up your score
