Barret Wallace - Discussion

quote
"Head of the underground resistance movement AVALANCHE, Barret depends on brute strength and his 'Gun-arm' to see him through."

Barret is the leader of the rebel group AVALANCHE. AVALANCHE was first founded at a remote place called Cosmo Cannyon. After a tragic accident brought on by Shinra, Barret adopted a girl named Marlene and swore that she wouldn't grow in the same state as the world is in. Barret and his friends re-founded AVALANCHE in the city of Midgar where he tries to stop the evil coporation Shinra.

Barret is very loud and takes the leader role with no hesitation. But his impatience sometimes causes him to come to rash decisions which can make things a bit troublesome at times.

Neoportal

In my opinion, Barret is one of the more underappreciated characters of, not only Final Fantasy VII, but the whole FF series. He founded the second incarnation of the AVALANCHE group, and has fought Shin-Ra to save the Planet for a long time, yet he isn't really appreciated as a character... some even criticize him as being a stereotype of African-Americans (though Cid is quite similar in personality, and the way he acts).

What are your opinions on Barret? Do you think he is underappreciated? Overappreciated?

This thread will be used for in-depth discussions about Barret, his personality, his character, his role in the game, his use in battle, etc.

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

Well... I do realize he do deserve more credit than what I give him. This is mainly because the better sides of him never really was presented in the actual game.

Judging solely from the gameplay he is just that, a gangsta black man from tha hoood.

And that also brings up another question, how did he get this behavior? No one in his birth village talks like this (And everyone is white...?) so are Square trying to say that all black people act this out of nature? xD. Although, that might be reading a bit much into it.

Overall, he is my least favorite character in FF VII. And if it wasn't for you FF XII with all of your stupid characters, he might have been my least favorite of the whole Final Fantasy series.

Well I feel the complete opposite! Barret was always on the front line with Cloud and some other character of my choosing. I don't really know why, but I have never had a problem with him. Personally, I like him waaay more than Yuffie, RedXIII, Cait Sith, and Aeris. I found all four of them to be pretty boring and annoying.

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

Barret wasn't black enough in Advent Children, but i base my opinion more on the game. He totally rocked, he was fun with his behaviour, bulling and brawling whereever he showed up, without meaning any harm to others!

I think Square made him black to add some color to the cast, and that's all of it, it doesn't have any more meaning. It's exactly the same with Kiros imo, they made him black to add to the variety.

His use in battle was very high, he was almost the same as Cloud, having rather weak Limits compared with Tifa in the beginning, but becoming insanely powerful later in the game.

By the time you need to do Tifas Slots, Barret can easily Mime his Catastophe or Ungarmax 2 or 3 times!

I agree, Meteor, it probably was for the variety. In FFX, they were meant to make Wakka 'african' too, but scratched the idea when the gave him the Besaid accent and the red hair. But like Barret, he did bring the team to life with his originality.
And his Ungarmax and Satelite Beam were both extreme assets to the party, Satelite Beam being one of the best limit breaks earlier on, like Meteorain.
The range on his weapon was also an asset with the more evasive enemies.

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

I liked barret a lot in the game, he was one of my main characters, his attitude was poor sometimes but you can see he has a very big heart, like marlene. I reckon he cared a lot about the whole group, he didn't wanna lose any of them. His attitude with Cloud starting off wasnt good because Cloud was an *ex soldier* all so he told him. So yes hes gonna be throwing insults at Cloud for that. He was really upset for loseing his close friends at midgar, he mentions that a few times. as the game goes on he'd do anything for his friends. Good guy in my opinion.

I really liked Barret in the original FFvii game, with his cock-sure attitude and the appearance of the awesome Mr T! But I didn't like how they portrayed him in Advent Children. He looked much more puny and conservative than he was in the game.

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

Look at the thread header.

Barrets appearance was way too short in Advent Children, and his attacks seemed to do nothing against Bahamut. Well, you can't show every charakter in the brief time of a movie, i think.

About the big heart, that's just natural for such a big chest. j/k

I like bringing Barret and Cid in my party because they always swear like crazy and go nuts whenever something happens. I will agree with you Gothic Girl, they are very similar.

Barret was a cool character in FF7. He was so bad ass but I think he was a stereotype for black people. I started to like him more when we found out about his past. So sad..

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

i dont think he is stereotype. ppl always wana find controversy in things but i think it is good that square put a black person in ff7,cos it is variety.
he was cool and funny, but i felt sad 4 him because of what happened in corel. i dont think that was barrets fault. i think it was shinras fault,so i dont understand why the corel ppl blamed barret???? he did nothing wrong!!

Maybe they blamed him, because he agreed to the Mako Reactor. But the only one, who was against it was Dyne, so the villagers could as well have blamed themselves.

I liked the animation of the Catastrophe Limit Break the most. First he shot into the ground to lift himself up, and then he unloaded his gun while keeping himself in mid air, that was just too cool!

re: Barret Wallace - Discussion

Heeey, that's a very good point. Why was Barret blamed for what happened to Corel? He wasn't the only one who was supporting ShinRa, and as he said, there were MANY people that were fooled by ShinRa's lies.

If anything
, ShinRa should have been blamed by the townspeople. It's not like Barret himself destroyed the town.

Always blame the black guy.

Seriously though, he was the one kind of egging them all on, so to speak. It is only common that humans try to lay the blame on someone else rather than on themself. Barret happened to convince alot of the people and they therefore figured that he was the root to all the bad.
