the highest level i ever got to was 80 I do level up all through the game like when your at bone village i went out and killed those big red t-rex looking things which gave me loots of carob nuts, leveling up is fun, and leveling materia

In FFVII (also maybe in FFVIII), Level is a relative thing. Becuase if you raise your stats to 255, you can be the same powerful than with hig level like 99 (but see that HP and MP don't grow with sources). Also when you have your Vitality/Spirit, or all stats at 255, Armor don't give you more Defense/Magic Defense, also rings who raise stats are useless, so this is why Ribbon is so great it never is useless (NOTE: Ribbon don't make you immune to "Stop" state, but this state goes away in battle after some time). but take care because armor like "Mystile" raises a lot your evasiveness, and even with stats maxed evesiveness is too low, for example with "Mystile" I have 118% Evasiveness against physic attacks and 78% evasiveness from magic attacks (which makes enemies like weapons miss at you, NOTE: the HP/MP based [Tentacles/don't remember from Emerald Weapon] damage can't be miss).
So if someone see my opinion stats are everything compared to Level (except for HP/MP)

but the materia simply adds to the awsome power of a level 99 carachter.
